Graduation fun!

My little brother Walt's girlfriend Val had her college graduation party this weekend and we took some time out so we could attend. Val's family can really party! The amazing food kept coming in waves. So much good stuff. Walt asked me to make cupcakes...he is crazy for cupcakes! I think he ate maybe seven last night. He is the only dude you will see sipping a tall glass of milk at a barbeque.

So when I was done making all of the cupcakes I realized I didn't have a way to get them all there in one piece. I have a couple containers but they are packed away. So Aaron took one of our long rectangle shipping boxes, sealed up the ends, and then cut the top open like a lid. And so the lid wouldn't just crush the cupcakes, he stuck little wood skewers in a few to keep the lid just a bit propped up.  Worked Great! :)

Val's mom made so so much food! It was like 2am and she was still partying...after about 48 hours of food and party prep. Such a great time. I'm so glad we went!

What are you guys up to this weekend?

ps..a few of you asked if that was me with the blue hair and tattoos...nope...that's my sister Missy! :)

Friday Favorites

Hey guys! What a week! I survived the Brooklyn move (nuts!)  and have been playing mega catch up on so many things. Aaron and I were really happy to get that batch of minis finished and listed.  (Thanks so so much for all of the kind words and orders! It means so much to us)  We're hard at work on some new things that I am really excited to share!  If all goes well I should be able to show you some fun stuff by Tuesday or so! We are in total summer mode here in the studio...summery florals, pastel polka dots, faded cabana stripes...eeee! Can't wait to show you guys! :)

The sun is shining right now and the breeze is lovely. If this is any indication of this weekends weather, I'll be a happy girl! :)  What do you guys have planned? Whatever it is have fun!

How about some Friday Favorites? Starting with the above cuteness!
Such a simple project...yet it makes me smile so big! Glass jars + neon pink contact paper + a hole punch = darling vases!

This happy happy happy vignette can be found at the  Vintage Cupcake Co. shop! Do I really need to say anything here? Seriously...can't you just taste the frosting?

As you know I'm a big collector of anything vintage kitchen, bakery, dollhouse-ish. One of my favorite things being a vintage Suzy Homemaker stove. They pop up on etsy quite often, and can always be found on ebay. They are certainly gaining popularity with our generation, and I'm sure the minty green color has something to do with it. The above stand mixer is way at the top of my wishlist! It's harder to find than the stove. I would adore it sitting on a shelf in the kitchen! I'm on the hunt!

This tea towel  makes me laugh! The crazy hand drawn font and overall unapologetic-ness. Love it!

This fantastic piece caught my eye a while back. On top of being cute, it's pretty clever!
The tilted shelving presents the spines of products to the user, reducing the need to kneel to find what is required. :)

Alrighty kids...
Let the weekend begin!!

How to Make a (Perfectly Delightful) Vanilla Birthday Cake

Are you already smiling? Yep! Me too! This picture made my eyes light up, set my heart aflutter, and had my mouth watering all in .001 seconds! The soft sweet colors, striped straw, pink frosting, that retro topper of the tiny ballet dancer, and that aqua tablecloth!...swoon.

Not only do I have the eye candy for you today...but also the recipe! Brought to you by the over-the-top amazingly talented Rosie of Sweetapolita!  I'm honored to be able to share this recipe with you!

It's a given that Rosie is an amazing baker...but when you add in her skills in photography and styling...it borders on being unfair ; ) She's living proof that all bakeries and bakers are not created equal. And I'm lucky enough to share a bit of Rosie's tastes in the sweet and sugary arts.

I could seriously gush and gush. I've been a fan for a long time! You may have seen her recipes and photos popping up on pinterest...they are the ultimate in eye candy!  I'd love to link up all of them for you guys but I'd be happier if you'd pop over and meet her for yourself. No need to thank me...I'm all about spreading the love! But I'd also appreciate it if I'm not blamed for any weight gain or too many trips to the grocery store for ingredients!

Okie Doke...without further a-do :

(Perfectly Delightful) Vanilla Birthday Cake

Yield: One 4-layer, 8-inch round cake (~5 inches tall once frosted)

Serves 10

Total batter: ~8 cups (1.75 kg)

Best-Loved Vanilla Cake Layers

Ingredients

1-1/2 cup whole milk (360 mL) (12 liquid ounces), at room temperature

7 large egg whites (210 grams)(7 ounces), at room temperature

1 whole egg, at room temperature

1 tablespoon (15 mL) pure vanilla extract (I use Nielsen-Massey Vanillas 8-oz. Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla Extract)

1/2 teaspoon (2.5 mL) almond extract

4 cups (460 grams)(16 ounces) cake flour, sifted

2-1/4 cups sugar (450 grams)(15.5 ounces)

1-3/4 tablespoons (25 grams) baking powder

1 teaspoon salt (7 grams)

1-1/2 sticks (170 grams) (6 ounces) unsalted butter, at room temperature and cut into cubes

6 tablespoons (85 grams)(3 ounces) vegetable shortening

Method

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease, line with parchment and flour two round 8-inch pans (you will be using each one twice), or four 8-inch pans (if you’re lucky enough to have four on hand). I use Parchment Paper Circles for ease.

2. In a medium bowl or measuring cup, combine and stir the egg whites, whole egg, 1/2 cup of milk, vanilla and the almond extract. Set aside.

3. Sift cake flour twice. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the dry ingredients, including the sugar, together on low-speed (I use the “stir” setting on my mixer) for 30 seconds.

4. Add the butter and shortening, blending on low-speed for about 30 seconds, then add remaining 1 cup of milk, and mix on low-speed until just moistened. Increase to medium speed and mix for 1 -1/2 minutes (90 seconds), but no more.

5. Scrape the sides of the bowl and begin to add the egg/milk/extract mixture in 3 separate batches; beat on medium speed for 20 seconds after each addition.

6. Pour 1/4 of your batter (~2 cups)(445 grams)(15.5 ounces) into each prepared pan (if you have 2 pans, you will bake 2 layers first followed by the remaining 2), spreading it evenly with a small offset palette knife. If possible, weigh the batter in the pans to ensure 2 even layers.

7. Bake cake layers two-at-a-time in center of oven and 2″ apart for 20 minutes or until a cake tester comes clean when inserted into the center. Be so careful to not over-bake. Check cake at 20 minutes, but not before, and once you feel it’s almost ready, set the timer for 2 minute intervals. Let cool on racks for 10 minutes before loosening the sides with a small metal spatula, and invert onto greased wire racks. Gently turn cakes back up, so the tops are up and cool completely.

8. Wash the 2 cake pans and line, grease and flour again and repeat steps 6 & 7.

9. Wrap tightly and store at room temperature for up to 2 days, refrigerator for up to 5 days, or frozen for up to 2 months. Best enjoyed day 1 or 2.

Whipped Vanilla Frosting (that tastes like ice cream!)

Yield: enough to fill, frost and decorate a 4-layer 8″ round cake

Ingredients

5 sticks (2-1/2 cups)(575 grams) (1 lb + 4 ounces) unsalted butter, softened and cut into cubes

5-1/4 cups (600 grams)(1 lb + 5 ounces) confectioners’ sugar, sifted

4-1/2 tablespoons (70 mL) milk

1-1/2 tablespoons (23 mL) pure vanilla extract — I use Nielsen-Massey Vanillas 8-oz. Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla Extract

pinch or two of salt

few drops pink gel colour — I use Americolor Electric Pink (*see notes)

pastel sugar pearls (I used 4mm), or any other sprinkles for decorating

Method

1. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, whip butter for 8 minutes on medium speed (I use “4″ on my KitchenAid). Butter will become very pale & creamy.

2. Add remaining ingredients and mix on low-speed for 1 minute, then on medium speed for 6 minutes. Frosting will be very light, creamy, and fluffy. If you want all of your frosting (for filling and frosting cake) pink, then add a drop of pink gel colour and mix again, adding one drop at a time until desired pink shade is achieved (see notes). If you want just the outside of the cake pink, you will fill the cake layers first, and then colour the remaining frosting pink.

3. Best used right away (for ideal spreading consistency), but keeps well once frosted.

Assembly of the Perfectly Delightful Vanilla Birthday Cake

1. Trim any doming or top crust from cake layers using a very sharp serrated knife (I use the Mac Bread Knife for all of my cake trimming, splitting, etc.).\]

2. Use a cake turntable (such as this Cake Stand) for filling, frosting and decorating, if a possible. Place a small dollop of frosting in the center of a cake plate or 8″ round thin foil-covered cake board, and place the bottom cake layer on top, top side up (face up).

3. Place ~1 cup of frosting on top of the cake layer, and spread evenly with a small offset palette knife. Gently place 2nd cake layer, face up, on top. Repeat until you come to your 4th layer, which you will place face down.

4. Put a generous scoop of frosting on top, spreading evenly with a small offset palette knife and working your way down the sides until you have a thin layer of frosting over the entire cake. Chill until set, about 30 minutes.

5. Remove from refrigerator and repeat step 3.

6. For the top of the cake border, place a large star decorating tip (I used 1E) in a large Decorating Bag filled no more than 1/2 full with pink frosting.

7. Hold pastry bag in one hand (your dominant hand) and slowly rotate the turntable with the other. Holding frosting-filled bag at a directly above the top of the cake (90° angle), squeeze a small bit of frosting and turn the table a bit at the same time, releasing pressure slowly then stop (this will create a tapered decoration). Repeat all the way around the cake, overlapping slightly each time you pipe a new “shell.”

8. For bottom border, you will want to have the cake on the plate or pedestal which you plan to serve it upon. Fill another pastry bag the same way, and this time use tip 1M  and repeat step 7. You will pipe at about a 45° angle this time (give or take). Sprinkle with your favourite sugar pearls or sprinkles atop the top border. For some kitschy charm, add a few Vintage Ballerina Cupcake Toppers to your cake!

Store, covered in a cake dome, at room temperature for up to 2 days, or in refrigerator for up to 5 days. Best enjoyed day 1 or 2 at room temperature.

A handful of minis

When we painted these first two images you see here...our : "when all else fails..." pieces, both of us agreed that they'd be perfect as mini wood plaques. Their message and just everything about their appearance totally fits the smaller format...roughly 5 x 7...and being plaques makes them perfect for gift giving, or even as a gift to oneself. No framing necessary...no big upset to your decor...just a simple little plaque you can hang in that special spot.

And after we made these wood plaques we got on a little kick. Forever, plaques like this were always our biggest sellers...but there was never enough time to keep them stocked up. When we do shows, or teach at art retreats we always have a table full of mini plaques, and people always thank us for making cute little take aways...easy to put in a shopping bag or suitcase. So we took time over the weekend and made a whole bunch featuring some of our favorite paintings. There's a lot in the shop now and there are more on the way soon. Also, in case anyone is interested...just ask, and we could pretty much make anything we offer into a plaque of just about any size. With the warm weather we're taking advantage of getting to use the saw out in our yard. We love the smell of fresh cut wood...and the feel of these adorable little plaques. Anyway, I just really wanted to pop in and show you some of these guys.
Thanks so much to all of you who motivated us to get this batch done!
xo, Jenny

What's in My Bag?

You know, when I thought of doing this post I chuckled. Why you ask? Well because "My Bag" is far from a grown up lady bag. My everyday bag or as I called it when i was little "my pocka-book" (is that a New York/ New Jersey thing? )  ...I don't drive..so no car keys. I rarely leave the house without Aaron or my sis...so as far as a house key..I keep that in a jewelry box. I don't even carry a phone. Yes I've already mentioned that I am a weirdo. Not new news. My bag is more of a "busy bag" that you'd bring along for your kid during church or a waiting room visit..or picnik.

This darling bag was handmade by a super sweet and talented friend of mine about 5 years ago. Yes..vintage sheets people...wayyy ahead of the game. Isn't it the cutest? It's perfect as a summer bag...or a park or beach "busy bag"

In it today:

I always love seeing these posts...so if you've recently done a "What's in My Bag" leave me a link to come see!!

A Big Box of Amazingness

Not too long ago the most amazing package showed up at my door. No, I hadn't ordered anything. It wasn't an etsy purchase, or swap. Nope. Just an amazing RAK box of amazingness from an online friend/customer of ours! Her name is Connie and she is one of the sweetest gals around. She asked for my mailing info a while back, mentioning that she had found something at a flea market that was so so me. Well color me spoiled...Gosh...so sweet right? So ok, fast forward a few months.

This HUGE box arrives and I swear to you...it took like 45 minutes to actually open every single little thing in the box. I was knee deep in treasures of all shapes and sizes. And, just as Connie had stated previously...the stuff was ALL so so ME! Vintage mini floral baking cups in their original box, cupcake toppers, vintage buttons still on cards, a top hat!, candles, geez...like so so much stuff! I really just stood there shaking my head side to side. Like noooway...noooway!

I am just so beyond thankful, grateful, honored, and totally thrilled. Not only because the stuff is so great but mainly because Connie was so amazing to have me in mind at all, and then to go and personally shop for stuff she knew I'd love. We often focus on the unpleasant experiences we have with people...so it's just so special when someone does something so great for you just out of the blue. I'm grateful that we connected via blogs, and art, and collectibles. She included the most touching note ever. Totally had me tearing up.

Connie, Thank you so so much from the bottom of my heart! You are the best!

Here are some favorite things...

vintage mini baking cups

I'm pretty sure this was the "original" flea market find/gift Connie was sending. You know...before she went and got CRAZY! :)  And it happens to my FAVORITE thing in the box! A tiny vintage mixer salt & pepper set! With original box! I adore that graphic!

Not sure what these are...maybe from an old soda fountain? Love them!

The most thoughtful and tiny details! Vintage bunny diaper pins! And Aar says those buttons must be made to look like sliced banana.

A happy vintage baby head to add to my collection!

One of many tiny treasures!

This gal is adorable! Not sure if she is meant to be in mourning...she appears that way a bit...or maybe I'm just a bit morbid and she's just off to the Kentucky Derby : )

This box of sunshine really made me smile BIG!

TTFN Brooklyn

Hi guys!
Oh my gosh! Well that was seriously an insane few days. I am in slow motion, mega tired, body aches, and I feel like I spent a week on West Coast time and now I'm adjusting to East Coast. But truth be told, my trip was only up the turnpike and over the bridge to Brooklyn.

As I mentioned on Friday, I had to help my sis pack up her entire apt. in Brooklyn. Ok, to say that she is a collector is an understatement. It's totally bordering on hoarder. Maybe there aren't any gangs of cats running the place, or thousands of empty cans, or diapers reaching the heavens (jeez, sorry for that visual...but gosh did you see that episode?...or those several episodes?...what a terrible recurring theme!)

Her hoarding is a cleaner, gentler version. More like somebody's idea of a dream thrift shop! Missy and I have very different styles...and color palettes. Where I go with pink, and aqua and sweets and bunnies...She goes for orange, and yellow, and turquoise, with Mexican folk art, religious iconography, cowboy boots, sugar skulls. She has sooo many great things. We've collected side by side over the years. Lots of fun going to flea markets and favorite junk shops.

But after 3 or 4 moves she is totally paring down. Now that she's moving in with us, it's a matter of squeezing everything into one room...her bedroom. So it will be interesting and fun to see her choice in direction. It took us about 24 hrs if you add it up, to completely pack the place up. Me, Missy, and our brother Jason. No tv, or internet...so in the downtime we were pretty much staring at the walls. We found a 1980s 25,000 Pyramid board game! Dick Clark looking eternally young on the box. We played that for a little while and a bit of Scategories.

Lots and lots and lots of packing. And organizing. Knowing that 85% would be in storage for now, we spent time sorting out the things that she could use here at the house, and some to sell at a yardsale or even on etsy.

I swear it felt like a week, not 3 days! The movers came 10:30 Monday morning. I think I slept about 3 or 4 hrs all weekend. Not kidding. When the movers arrived we only stuck around for a little while, knowing we had to get back to Jersey to make "room" here at the house. Oh and did I mention that it was a rainy day? And my sis drives a 54 Ford! With no windshield wipers. We were going to rent a car...but the truck itself was gonna be tons of $$$. So we just dodged raindrops.

I'm so so glad to be home! The back porch is seriously filled to the ceiling with Missy's stuff...and will take a few days to go through and organize and move.

I know it was hard for Missy to leave Brooklyn. But it's just for now. A great reset button. Time to save some money, work like crazy...and enjoy the shore! I know it'll all make sense!

Ok guys...thanks so much for popping in! I'll be back to my regular blogging tomorrow! :)

Love ya!
