A cute & crafty haul

When the mail arrived today I was beaming! You already know that I just adore washi tape. I love to use it in my art journaling, collages, cards, and tags, and it is just about the cutest method for hanging small bits of art on the studio walls. I know I'm not alone when I say that being a washi tape lover has you walking this weird line, wherein you want to use it on everything and don't want to use any of it at all. (just want to hoard piles and piles till the corner of my studio resembles a washi tape ball pit that I can lay, jump, and roll around in) True.

Since debuting our Art Journaling series I've been pulling out all of my bins, baskets, tins, tubs, jars, baggies, and folders,  gathering up all of my favorite bits to use and share with you guys. If you have it..use it! It'll only make you love it more...right? So I vow to use all of my stash favorites each week. This will be that little push I needed. I remember when I went through this sort of thing back in 2007 at the height of my vintage wallpaper hoarding. I didn't want to use my slowly and carefully collected, coveted papers. But what good did staring at them do?
I know when I finally conquered that hurdle, I was just in love with every collage, tag, and assemblage so much more! Again guys...if you love it use it!  :)

A few of the washi patterns above will replenish what I've used...but the pink cameras, and summery floral, as well as the cameos are new to me! I've been drooling over them online for a while and thought it was about time to add them to the collection and to my art making!  I found them here.

And you may remember this adorable little Poulain Camera stamp as one of my Friday Favorites from a little while back. eeeee!...it is now mine! I am so excited! Isn't it seriously the cutest? And it's little brother just had to come live with me as well. Yeah for some reason I see the Fotka as a boy.  And the Poulain as a girl.  Well it makes sense to me. Humor me. ;)

So yes, today was a happy happy mail day over here! I'm wondering what will end up in this week's journal spread? Maybe some stuff from this haul?? You know, since we used Aaron's journal last week, and he chose the colors and vibe...it's now my turn! Bring on some pink!! :)

Meet Jennifer Priest of Hydrangea Hippo

I'm thrilled to introduce you to this month's Featured Sponsor!  A maker of fun, colorful, happy things! A master scrapbooker, and mixed media lover, whose creations come straight from the heart!

What is your name (and business name) and where are you from?
Jennifer Priest of Hydrangea Hippo and I am from Southern California. I currently live in Hesperia, C.A.

Age range? 34

What do you do? When did you start?
I create with paper and a little of everything! I started crafting as early as I can remember but when I was 9, I started selling my crafts. I started with home decor and jewelry. When I got pregnant with my first child, I started scrapbooking. A few years ago I started working my past crafts into my work and now I consider myself more of a mixed media artist and papercrafter. Drop me in any aisle of the craft store and I will find something to make!

What/Who are you inspired by?
Good design inspires me. I love Pinterest for this reason! I love looking at home decor, fashion, design, typography...all of those things inspire me.

Where do you create?
I create in about 1/3 of my house. I have a craft room that has spilled over to my formal living room and dining room. Sometimes I craft in front the TV on a TV tray--watching movies are a great time to do mindless things like make die cuts or cut ribbon. Every Friday, Saturday, Sunday I work in my booth at Crafted at the Port of LA in San Pedro, CA -- its a warehouse filled with market stalls with all kinds of handmade art by artisans and crafters. I spend alot of time there creating in my stall.

Visit Hydrangea Hippo:
110 E. 22nd Street
Booth A120 and A140
San Pedro, CA
Open Fridays 12pm-8pm
Saturdays, Sundays 10am-7pm

If you could teach anywhere in the world where would it be? why?
I would love to teach at a Mixed Media Event. The attendees are always so accepting of cool new techniques and are ready to try anything and everything. It is exciting when your students bring that infectious enthusiasm in the room--it makes teaching easy and super fun!

Do you collect anything?
I used to collect Garfield items so I still have about 25 plush Garfields.

Favorite supplies?
I love sprays and paints. Any project looks better with a little splatter.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I see myself retired. No, I don't think about my business in 5 years. That is weird. I think about what I want to be doing with my family, which would be taking my daughter to college, being healthier with my hubby (exercising and stuff), maybe camping and traveling, and making science fair projects with my then 4th grader Matthew. Whatever my businesses are doing, they just have to work around that. Maybe it is just that creating will always be a part of my life without question, so I have not even thought about it. It just is always there!

 Favorite websites/blogs/shops...etc?
I love Pinterest. It is mesmerizing. I am also really into Crafty Pod right now--love the articles and easy feel of the site. And finally, I am into thrifting alot these days - I cannot leave the Habitat for Humanity ReStore without a car full of stuff. I got an amazing vintage couch with solid wood frame for $15 last week!

A Big Thank you to Jennifer!

Sweet Hot Mess group art show

I had briefly mentioned that me and Aaron will have our artwork on display in a gallery out in the midwest mecca Minneapolis! And as promised I'm now taking some time to give you guys all the sugary details. Yes that's right...sugary...because this show is dedicated to sweets! When the illustrious Rudy Fig tapped us to feature in the show we were flattered. This show is one of a kind. On display will be the sweets inspired works of national, international, and locally known artists. And it really gets interesting when the visual meets the edible! Uh huh...in addition to us painters and renderers of assorted media, there will be bakers creating cakes and things that are directly inspired by the featured artists. And the cakes will all be part of a Cake Decorating contest that will be judged right there on opening night! So there will be sweets to gaze upon and graze upon all evening long.

The show is curated by baker Katie Carpenter, and the artist Rudy Fig...who is amazing! Be sure to check out her work. I've included a couple pics of her paintings in this post. When we were last in Minneapolis for The Creative Connection we fell in love with the city and vowed to return. Unfortunately it isn't in the budget for us to make the trip. So our artwork will attend and we'll be there in spirit. I cannot wait to see photos from the event. If you are near the Twin Cities and are one of the lucky ones who get to go, we'd love to hear all about it! Please send us a link to your blog post or your pics!

We have a batch of our JUMBO diecuts in the show, including some brand new ones... JUMBO pink, blue, and cherry topped cupcakes! They are so so fun!!  And there will also be some of our Instagram inspired pieces.

The Opening is on August 25th at 7:00 pm. At the Cult Status Gallery.

As I said above, Rudy Fig's work is amazing. I just had to share a couple pics of her paintings! LOVE!

Ok, once again, a big thanks to Rudy and Katie for including us in their fab show! We hope for smashingly sweet success!
 xo, Jenny

Friday Favorites

This has to be a joke. Really? It's Friday already? That is absolutely Nuts! And I think I might be starting to sound like a bit of a broken record. Every week I'm dumbfounded by the calendar...asking you guys how it could be Friday already. I definitely deserve some eye rolls at this point...and I wouldn't fault any of you for throwing them my way. Earlier, right before I started gathering my Friday Favorites, I said to Aaron "Wait, it's Friday already?!" And he gave me a look like "really? you're shocked? Am I gonna have to hear this every week?"
But it's the truth. The days of the week are running away like wild horses over the hills. Anyway, I guess that's the state of my life at this moment.
But I'm not attaching any negativity to any of this. In fact...maybe it's a good thing. Because currently, Friday means it's the day after our Thursday Art Journaling with Jenny & Aaron class...which is something we are very excited about. So far, the response and turnout have been great. It's only week one and we've already got so many peeps getting creative right along side us. And speaking of...if you decide to do any Art Journaling this weekend, please do us the honor of blogging about it, and linking your blog up to yesterday's class post. There is so much more great stuff to come. So yeah, bring on next Thursday...I'm eagerly anticipating it's arrival.

Ok, now for the Friday Favorites.

The pic above is so fab and it features something I've been wanting to get for a while. That framed camera is an Engineer's print, which can be purchased for under $5.00! Available at Staples, these oversized prints are so cheap because they aren't exactly premium quality. They come on very thin paper (comes on a roll) and even though it's low quality printing, it has it's own look. So many ideas in my head! And then the idea of mounting them...and embellishing could be amazing! This may just have to happen sooner than later.

A print of an original illustration from the Missed Connections project by Sophie Blackall. I absolutely love when a great concept meets perfect execution. You have to check out her entire collection. Each painting just gets better and better.

Now normally I'm a bit more on the vintagey side with only bits of mid century modern...but sometimes, I might not need all of my vintagey cottagey goodness. If done the right way, I can take an entire room that's streamlined. This kitchen is case in point. Just walk in, don't change a thing, start making pancakes.

Ok, once again...I couldn't get through a Friday Favorites without some geo stuff. This tutorial is so so cool. Yes, you can make this! Made from coffee stir sticks, black string, and not much else. Wow.

With Fall right around the corner I'm thinking of back to school shopping. And mind you, I haven't been a student for eons...and I don't have kids to school shop for. No, the idea of back to school shopping is just programmed into my brain. I kinda think it will stay that way forever. September means new clothes! And I'm loving these wedge platforms. They will go perfectly with my First Day of School Outfit.

Ok, another Fabulous Friday is here and I hope you've enjoyed taking a peek at my Faves. I look forward to seeing you next week and hopefully you'll check in on Thursday for some Art Journaling!

Art Journaling with Jenny & Aaron class 1

Guys!! It's Thursday! Hooray!
Oh my gosh, we have been working like two nuts over here. First, let me tell you that this was a learn-as-you-go sort of thing. We considered doing the class as an actual moving video, but it just seemed as though you really don't get perfect shots or lighting, and the narrating thing could be awkward. So we decided that the best angle of attack would be with lots of detailed photos put into a video format! Of course on it's own it only gives an idea of each step, so we included full detailed instructions for you to follow along. In the upper left corner of each photo you'll see a title. In the instructions we've titled each step with those same titles so that you'll have an image to match each step. You can view the video once, or twice, or more...pause where you'd like, rewind, fast forward...watch it here on the blog, full screen, or on youtube. We definitely think that this was the clearest way to get our points across and give you crisp, bright images for you to reference.

We also went back and forth over whether we'd use both of our journals or just one journal. We decided to collaborate on one spread in one journal. If we did two spreads there would be like 200 photos! And we already kinda went photo crazy...which is another reason why we needed to go with a slideshow in video format. It's exciting that this has forced us to jump into using our youtube channel! eeee! This could get nuts! Just a warning. I'm thinking some vlogs could happen too.

This week we decided to use Aaron's journal. So he had the initial choice as far as color scheme. But the singularity stops there. This was definitely a full on collabo. So much so, that I'm wishing this spread was in my journal! Haha is that weird?

( in the first steps below we're using Kraft paper, but you can substitute it for any paper at all. Use all the same methods described but change the words Kraft paper to whatever you like. These steps simply describe how to add a paper base to your pages. You can use a full sheet or even torn or cut scraps. Jenny often uses phonebook pages to thicken up her moleskin pages.)

reinforcing with kraft paper. Since marble notebook pages are flimsy we like to reinforce them. In this case using one of our favorite supplies, Kraft paper. Just cut a piece thats a tiny bit bigger than your page. You can trim off the excess later. And even if you aren't using a marble notebook Kraft paper is still a great base to work upon. You can glue it into any journal.

brush on medium. With your 3/4 inch brush, brush on a thick layer of decoupage medium. You'll notice the notebook page rippling quite a bit but don't worry, the Kraft paper will solve that.

lay kraft paper down. Once you've got a nice thick coat of medium then lay down your piece of Kraft paper. Every time we teach a class we'll see that people like to lay the paper down and then immediately brush medium on top of it. We don't not subscribe to that method...brushing wet on top of wet will add bubbles and ripples. As described in the next step we smooth out the paper with our hands and let it dry and fully adhere.

smooth paper. With heavy hands smooth out the Kraft paper, eliminate any ripples or bubbles. Keep on rubbing until you know that it's fully adhered.

crease edges. To make sure that you get a nice adhesion all the way to the ends of the page run your thumb or finger along the edge to crease it.

flip page and trim. If you have excess paper turn the page so you can see the excess and trim it off with a scissor.

gesso pages. For this spread we decided that one page would be Kraft paper and the facing page we'd reinforce, or bolster, with a thick coat of gesso. In this case we used Americana brand gesso. It's super thick and when it's dry your page will almost feel like vinyl. We really like this.

reinforce seam with tape. After your gesso is dry run a piece of masking tape down the seam of the journal. This actually does reinforce your binding and it makes for a smoother transition from page to page.

select papers and elements. Think about what type of color scheme you'd like, what types of patterns, bits and pieces. This is the fun part. We wanted to go with a tight palette...a more masculine feel being that it's Aaron's journal. He has an affinity for the letter A and the number 9.

tear and cut papers. With a bit of an idea of where you'll place things start tearing and cutting your papers and elements.

play around with layout. Before gluing anything down it is always a good idea to play around with your layout. Just place things on the pages until it feels right. There are no rules.

adhere papers with medium. To adhere papers brush on decoupage medium and lay the papers on the wet medium. It's better to be generous with the medium. If you apply too little you won't get good adhesion.

smooth papers. Just as you smoothed and rubbed the Kraft paper, do the same in this step. Eliminate ripples and bubbles. But be gentler than you were with the tougher Kraft paper.

consider your design. At this point your pages will start looking like something. Take time to pull back and consider where you really want to go with the spread...like where you might place writing spots...or photos...or doodles later on.

finish adding elements. Add the next layers of stuff. The details like our letter A and number 9. The scrolly writing spot. Your points of interest. All of ours are adhered with the same decoupage medium.

trace shapes. We used a couple bottle caps to trace circles onto the page. Why? because we thought a couple of white circles would look good right there. And later we could add some text maybe.

paint in shapes. We used a #6 round brush to paint in our circles with white paint. It only took one coat because it was quality white paint. You might need two coats if you want a solid look.

seal pages. After all of our papers that we adhered were dry and after the painted circles were completely dry we then sealed our pages with a coat of matte finish gel medium by Liquitex...we also recommend Golden brand. When sealing pages be sure to apply a thick even coat...and get FULL coverage. Later on, if you apply washes etc...if you miss any areas with this sealer coat then those areas will be "vulnerable"...meaning washes will totally screw up any raw sections of paper. So just be sure to apply a nice even coat.

make a color wash. We used a tan paint that sorta matched the Kraft paper, but you can use ANY color you like. With a #6 round brush we dabbed some water into the well of paint on the palette. It's not an exact science...you just want to water down the paint a bit.

brush on wash. We thought the white was a bit stark so we "aged" it a bit with the tan wash. Just brush it on the areas where you want the wash. And start small and light until you get a feel for it. Don't  brush the wash on a giant swath of page because you might have trouble working with it in the next step. The key is to go little by little. Maybe like 4 square inches at a time.

blot wash. With a paper towel blot the wash that you've brushed on. Again, one section at a time.

blot and dab wash. This is pretty much the same step but we made it into two just to emphasize the blotting and dabbing. You're just doing it until you get your own desired effect. We wanted a parchmenty, tobacco stained feel. You can do your whole page or just accents.

speckling. We did speckling in two different colors...black and pale aqua. To speckle you'll have to water down the paint in your palette the same way you did with the wash. We use a #6 round brush...load it with the watered down paint...hold the brush a few inches above your page...and just tap the metal end with your index finger. Do it to your desired effect. We love speckling for it's imperfection. It's messy and haphazard and perfect in it's own way.

crosshatch with DIY stamp. Last weekend we made some stamps by wrapping yarn around a wood block. Here we applied paint to the stamp and created a crosshatch design. We really only wanted an accent up in the corner of the page...bet you can stamp all over the place if you want.

gesso wash to mute areas. Sometimes you want certain colors or patterns on your page to be less bold. In this case we watered down some gesso on our palette...the same way we made a wash with paint. Then brush the gesso wash on the areas that you want to mute and blot or wipe off with a paper towel. Again, do this to your own desired effect.

gesso and paint wash. This is pretty much the same as the previous step but we added some of the tan paint to our gesso wash. We just wanted to carry over some tan to match the Kraft paper on the opposite page.

consider your progress. At this point you've accomplished a lot and your pages are really starting to look like something. Now is when to consider some fun details...the little things...maybe add small pops of color and texture...doodles...heck, even glitter. Pull out some supplies.

"glue stick" paint dots. We seem to always add messy, randomly spaced polka dots. We do this by either dipping a glue stick into paint or the eraser end of a pencil. Just dip your round tip object into whatever paint color you like and press dots onto your pages in areas that might need a little pop of color.

bottle cap paint rings. Again, we love the messy, imperfect look that bottle cap paint rings provide. Just apply paint to the rim of the cap and then press down on your page.

"distress" edges with paint. We love to "distress" the edges of our pages with paint. In this case we used colors that contrasted well. Aqua against the Kraft paper, and white against the aqua polka dot paper. This process is very imperfect. Just dip your thumb or finger in paint and rub the very edge of the page.

backing photocopy with watercolor paper. We knew we wanted to add an old photo to this spread, and we knew it was gonna be placed right on top of those bold stripes. Since the photo was a photocopy we had to first back the photocopy with watercolor paper. This way those stripes won't show right through the paper when we adhere it to the page. It also bolsters the photo a bit. Adds some texture to your page. To back it with watercolor paper just brush decoupage medium onto watercolor paper, lay the photocopy down on the wet medium, and smooth out just like you did when applying your papers to your pages. Then cut out. Again, we did not brush medium over the photo.

adhere photo. Now adhere the photo in the desired spot using the same method as above. We often use a clean, dry paper towel to press down photocopies just so our possibly damp fingertips don't muss the picture.

faux stitching with sharpie pen. These are the little details that make your pages special. Use a sharpie pen to create faux stitching around shapes for a sewed on look.

outline paint dots with sharpie pen. Again, it's not about perfection. Doodling and outlining the shapes and dots around the page is a great way to add more interest and texture.

add bits of washi tape. Washi tape is so great for Art Journaling. It's often one of the very last elements we'll add to a page. In this case we wanted some metallic gold to set off the vintage photo. Even though Mr. Moustachio is securely adhered already, the washi tape gives him a scrapbooky feel.

Hooray! Yes, you now have a dazzling spread. For this very first class we wanted to take our pages to the step right before you write in them. Adding text is a very fun step and you might fill in your pages with words right away...or you might take your time and wait until you have your thoughts in order and you can really make your Journal statement. We have so so many pages that are at this stage...just waiting for text.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok guys, this was our first week. As you can see, there are so so many steps and the text takes up a lot of space. This is why we went with the slide show video format instead of trying to squeeze the photos and text into one post. That would be a whole lot of scrolling. If you have any questions or suggestions...please please send them our way. We would love to hear from you and see your results. Below is a link-up that is reserved specifically for this class. So if you have a blog and you are participating in Art Journaling with Jenny & Aaron...This link-up is for you. We want to hear all about it and see all about it! Whatever you do this week...call it "homework" if you want...or if that conjures bad memories...call it something else...just try make it a point to come back to this post and use the link-up below. It will be so much more fun for ALL involved...getting to see and hear about your own Art Journaling.

Again, our pages are an example...it's just what we do...our style. Don't for one second think that there is one ounce of rigidity in Art Journaling. Do what you want...How you want. We just hope we can offer a hand.
Also, we'd love for you to grab the button above and put it on your page, spread the word, all that good stuff. This was really fun for us...and if we've added even a smidge of creativity to you life then we are as happy as can be!

'til next Thursday! Keep on Art Journaling!
xo, Jenny & Aaron

P.S. If you are just joining us, we blogged all of our favorite supplies here.

Wonderful Wednesday...a link party!

How is it Wednesday already? Oh my gosh this week is flying by! Aaron and I have been super busy working on a bunch of different things all at one time. I was just about to say something about having a bunch of irons in the fire but it's way too hot already. Oh wait, too late...I've already conjured up visuals of hot irons...sorry. I guess I'm just trying to say that while I was busy making other plans I blinked, and it was Wednesday. As I've mentioned other times...I try really hard to make lists to keep us on track, but  things have a habit of forcing their own order. We are putting the finishing touches on a big group of pieces for a gallery show! Which we are beyond pscyhed about! I'll share more about that this weekend. And we've been working on a bunch things for our Art Journaling series. This is where good editing skills come into play. We have to pace ourselves with the classes. Me and Aaron both have a tendency for over sharing. And when it comes to classes, the last thing you want to do is overwhelm your audience. With that said, I think we settled on a great starting point. Jeez, we're excited to get creative with you guys.

So, amid all those hot irons, I'm co-hosting this week's Wonderful Wednesday Link Party again! So if you'd like to meet some new blog friends, link up and start hopping! : )

See you guys Thursday for some super fun Art Journaling!

xo Jenny

rainy day crafting

I've been meaning to share this kit with you for a while now, but one thing was standing in my way...I first had to put it together! This beyond adorable mini table and chairs is made simply of vintage dictionary papers and paper board. I've had it for far too long...stashed away for a rainy day. And guess what?... yesterday was that rainy day!

I picked it up last October while teaching at Art Is...You. It is just one of many amazing kits created and produced by Navel Jelly Studios. One drawback in teaching and vending at these amazing art events is that your busy schedule causes you to kinda miss out on seeing the dazzling goods that are being offered up by the other ridiculously talented instructors. With all the last minute running around (it's a common occurrence for teachers to be doing last minute class prep in their hotel rooms...glitter in carpets anyone?) And then full days in your own classrooms.
In this case it just so happened that the night we arrived, Taryn, the gal behind Navel Jelly Studios, is also a night owl and was putting the finishing touches on her booth for the next day. And lucky for me, I had Aaron to unload boxes while I may or may not have wandered away to hawk some goodies. In Navel Jelly's booth I spied so many amazing bits, and Taryn was sweet enough to put them to the side for me. This kit is one of them. It is part of a collection of paper craft kits called Paperlings. I had so much fun putting together my mini table and chairs. The kit comes with all you need except for glue! The directions recommend scissors, glue stick, tacky glue, and toothpick. I myself always wing it...and used mod podge and a glue gun. That's how I roll. (but I'm gonna get all Mom and Dad on you here and tell you "Do as the directions say, not as I do" unless you too roll like that...in that case - I say Party!) It all came together so quickly and I seriously adore this little set!  And guys, are you ready for this?...it was only 6.95! Yeah sure, you can say it's just paper...and yeah, you gotta make it yourself...but it's mega cute...and everything is here for you...and laser cut! And making things is fun! I can't say enough good things about Navel Jelly Studios. If you are looking for unique ephemera, supplies, and kits with an antiquey feel...visit their shop!

Oh, and those adooorable itsy bitsy sweets are handmade by a talented gal named Grace. I fell in love with her tiny sweets way back in 2006 (which is when I purchased these), when she was in middle school! ( between me and Aaron she quickly earned the nickname Amazing Grace)

And thank you so so much for all of the enthusiasm toward the new Art Journaling with Jenny & Aaron series!  We are so so psyched for Thursday! And I'm happy you guys liked the DIY stamps! I'd love to see yours!

Okie Doke... back to work!
Have a Great week guys!
xo Jenny
