Antique Cabinet Card Halloween Nut Cups tutorial

This was a little project Aaron and I put together way back in 2009 as guest designers. We thought we'd revisit it and share it with you!  Please forgive the poor quality photos...they are pre "grown-up camera" ;)

Some of the best crafting projects are those that make use of your favorite collectibles. We've got a drawer full of gorgeously old tattered photos & antique cabinet cards...just tons of great pictures of complete strangers whom we now refer to as "instant relatives". You pick them up at junk shops, antique stores, estate sales...and you're not quite sure how you can use them but you know that one day you will.

We are big fans of nut cups. We make them for just about every holiday. They're nostalgic, they're useful, they're fantastic party favors, place settings, candy containers...and best of all...They are super easy to make! These are a bit different then our usual design which are round and have pipe cleaner handles. This is more of a die cut/shelf sitter nut cup hybrid. Here's what you'll need to make these:

-Antique cabinet cards /photos...
(just make sure you've got a good size bust portrait. We didn't want to cut up our cabinet cards so we made color copies of the originals and used those. We also enlarged them on the copier so that they were the right size. approximately 4 inches wide and 4 inches tall.)
-Artist mat board
-cardboard craft boxes. 2 1/2" square x 1 1/2" tall
-ultra fine tip black sharpie marker
-black crepe paper streamer
-cream crepe paper streamer
-black rick rack
-cream or black paper shred
-scissors
-xacto knife
-1" paint brush
-mod podge or an equivalent medium
-all purpose glue
-black & cream patterned paper of your choice

1. cut out your photo copied portraits and apply them with mod podge to the mat board. Brush a thin even coat of mod podge onto the mat board, lay your image on top, press down and with a clean, dry paper towel carefully rub out any bubbles & wrinkles. Let dry.

2. with your ultra fine tip sharpie draw on the masks. Do it in pencil first to avoid shaky hand mishaps.

3. cut out the portrait with scissors and use the xacto knife for the more complicated parts. be sure to use a plastic craft mat underneath. You may have to crop your image to fit right. About 4 inches wide by 4 to 4 and a half inches tall is a good size.

4. flip it over and apply a patterned paper to the back of your portrait die cut. Use the same technique as before with the mod podge. carefully trim away excess paper with xacto knife.

5. apply the pleated crepe streamer to the craft box. do the black first..raise it up about a quarter of an inch when you attach it to the box so that you have a layered look with the black and cream. to apply the pleated streamer use your all purpose glue. it's fairly easy. just start at one corner of the box...put a dab of glue on the box and press the start of the streamer to it and hold til it's set...then put a dab of glue right there on top of the crepe and fold back the crepe on top of itself, about a half inch, hold until set. Keep repeating this process around the box for a pleated effect. Remember...you only have to apply the crepe paper pleat to 3 sides. On the 4th side you will attach the die cut.

6. Once you've got the black pleat on the box, then, using the same exact process, apply the cream pleat right over it...about a quarter inch lower...just make it flush with the bottom of the box so that your box stands evenly. this way you'll have a layered look.

7. now apply the rick rack around the box. Again, using your all purpose glue, just do a dab at a time, press and hold down about an inch and a half til it's set...then move along to the next inch until you've covered 3 sides of the box.

8. next, with the all purpose glue attach your die cut to the front of the box. Just make the bottom flush with the bottom of the box.

9. fill up your nutcup with paper shred...either cream or black.

These are just so perfect for Halloween because they are fantastic little candy holders...use them as place settings for your little Halloween Happening! Add a handful of sweets & treats and some spooky little surprises. For the purposes of this tutorial we kept these pretty basic, but we're sure you'll think of a million ways to add your own personal touches and fabulous embellishments...some fine glitter highlights...maybe add a witch hat to the gals...attach banners so you can personalize them with the names of your party guests...etc.

We just love classic Black & White for Halloween decor. The look is so timeless and works for everyone...plus, all those antique photos that you've got stuffed in boxes and drawers, those "instant relatives" can now join the party, they've got a brand new purpose.

 Happy Halloween!
xoxo Jenny & Aaron

Unexpected Arrivals: Cold Weather and a Sweet Package

Let me start by telling you that it is sooo darn chilly here in NJ! We pulled out a second blanket last night and I slept in long sleeves! Not even 3 days ago it was near 80 degrees! Which was awful and I have no desire to return to that. I'm a fan of chilly weather but man, it came outta nowhere. We coped by brewing cup after cup of tea and pulled out the sweaters...Jimmy Carter would be proud of us for not turning the heat on. We also kept warm be moving around a whole lot. We turned the place even more upside down than it was. Cleared out the living room...including some boxes that were "hiding" behind the couch for like 4 months.  We brought things upstairs to the spare bedroom...did lots of dusting, sweeping, and mopping. But you know how it is...before things get better, they get worse. One room sparkles while another looks like a tornado hit. It's the process of chipping away.

The other morning an unexpected package arrived at our door. I know I've mentioned on more than one occasion that I LOVE food gifts! So this was beyond a sweet surprise! We are long time fans of Stonewall Kitchen. Back when we were casual shoppers and drove all over Jersey finding cute little gift shops it seemed like we never came home without at least one item from Stonewall Kitchen...all of their mixes and jams and dips are so deeeelish! And when I think of them I think Fall! Again...what a gift. It came from a super sweet soul. An online friend, blog reader, & customer...no, make that repeat customer. And let me tell you...she had no cause (other than being extremely nice) for sending us anything. She had ordered some stuff from us for herself and then returned to order some things for a friend of hers. Unfortunately, we took an embarrassingly long time to get her order out to her, so we included some gifts for the trouble. So...what does this sweetheart do? She thanks us by sending us gifts! Geez! A heart of gold. Once again, I can't say it enough...I am just so thankful for the friendships we have cultivated over the years through art and blogging.

And here's proof as to how much I loved this gift...from the second I grabbed it from my doorstep 5 minutes did not pass before I had my mixing bowl out, and very soon after that the house was filled with the scent of Pumpkin Scones baking in the oven! I cannot thank her enough for this gesture that truly warmed my home and my soul.

So I had some other things planned for the blog this week, including a really really fun tutorial. And wouldn't you know it...yesterday while attempting to download pics, just as I do every single day, my camera tells me to "check connected device". Whaaat?! I can't stand technical difficulties, and the process of downloading pics from my camera to the macbook is such a simple one. I use the usb cord that came with the camera and just plug it right into the side of the macbook...easy squeezy. I'm nooo techy but I've been doing this sort of thing daily for years and I've never had a problem. The computer wasn't even acknowledging the camera. No folder popping up like usual. So, then I tried it on my desktop PC and the same thing happens! Next, I figured that I should just try the memory card. I inserted it into the PC...and nothing. Now, I've never used the memory card directly in this computer before, so I couldn't really narrow it down to being a problem with the memory card. Yeah, I wish I had another memory card to try out but of course I haven't seen any of those since moving. So at this point it's a toss up between a memory card problem or a problem with the usb...and of course I don't have an extra usb cord that fits in my camera. I spent three hours on message boards and help guides. The only thing that came up over and over was making sure that my camera was set to mass storage...which of course it was. Then I got the idea to insert the card into our printer...which I've never done...and the printer was able to read the card. So at this point it looked like the card was ok and it's probably the usb cord that has stopped working. But I also kept thinking "please please please don't let the problem be in my camera!"

Well, I asked on facebook if anyone had any ideas. A few gals suggested that I get a card reader...one that I could plug right into the side of a macbook. This would eliminate the usb cord and also let me download pics without having the camera precariously attached. Wow, this stuff leaves me frazzled. We just rely on technology so so much and my mind immediately goes to all of this week's deadlines and putting together our Art Journaling class.

Ok, with all that said (and I went into specifics just in case anyone out there suffered a similar problem) we'll be picking up a card reader today and hopefully, our troubles will be solved. Have you guys ever had this issue? Oh, and also let me tell you that I use a Sony A390 slr that I hook directly to the macbook...no software necessary...so it isn't a software issue.

Aside from the camera issues I'm optimistic about this week. I welcome this chilly weather. Come night time we'll wrap up in a blanket on the couch, have some tea, and stream some horror from Netflix. I wish all of you guys a cozy week! Happy Columbus Day!

Friday Favorites

Here we are...Friday! And yes, the week zoomed by for us. We have packing and shipping materials all over the place. The studio has bubbled over into the living space and nearly every flat surface has become a temporary work station of some sort. Some for wrapping boxes, some for drying paint, some for hammering brackets onto the backs of boards...it would all be very efficient if we didn't also have to live here. But I'm thrilled to have finished some larger projects as well as a bunch of orders this week. I can happily report that almost all of the pieces that we were feverishly completing over the past several days are already hanging on walls in their new homes. And one order we're especially excited about was for a long time collector of our work: Lochel's Bakery, who are celebrating their 70th Anniversary this Saturday!! That makes us so happy! A third generation bakery! We are honored to be a part of the look of their business and it's so cool that they ordered a bunch of die cuts and signs in order to dress up their bakery for the big celebration. If we were a bit closer we'd be there to celebrate with them! Anyone in the Hatboro P.A. area, be sure to pop in and have a cupcake for us! :)

I wish I could say that we had some dreamy Fall daytrip planned for this weekend, but alas, we'll be in the studio working away on a ridiculously long list of things. But you can bet that there will be cups of tea, good music, and some baking happening.  And in October the TV gods often bestow us with great horror movie marathons. Speaking of...Oh my gosh!...The Walking Dead is back in less than 2 weeks!! We've been counting down the days! Simply cannot wait! Same goes for The Talking Dead...which is the Chris Hardwick hosted talk show that immediately follows The Walking Dead. Yes, we are mega geeks for this stuff! :)

Alrighty, enough scuttlebutt, how about some Friday Favorites?

Will you get a load of the house above! It's images like this that remind me that the world is a place worth working really hard for. This is The Polka Dot House as seen in Life Magazine April 14, 1952. Further proof that the world wasn't actually in Black & White in the 50's! Well it was until the owner of this house in Rhode Island decided otherwise. He said he had painted his house black with a white chimney and afterwards he looked at it and said it felt much too somber. So he did what me and Aaron do almost every single day of the week...he added colorful polka dots! How fun!

I'm not embarrassed to admit that I'm vertically challenged. So when I shop for shoes I'm only looking at the variety that come with an additional 3 inches. These striped platforms certainly fit the bill! I can envision the countless outfits that these would boost (literally! ha!).

I adore these teapot wall hooks . It's simple but fantastic ideas that make up great decor. Taking everyday objects and making them into fun conversation pieces is a great talent.

Can you imagine if you tossed a ball of yarn? This is like the ultimate calm before the storm. How in the world did they capture 7 kittens with their paws on the rail all at once?!

Again, this sweater just makes me think of Art Journaling! Am I nuts? It's like a hand carved rubber stamp! I adore it! I'd probably wear it with a black bubble skirt, black tights and some of those three inch platforms I adore so much! :)

Ok, thats all for Friday Favorites. It's time to get back to those multiple work stations! Thanks again for checking in...see you soon!

Art Journaling with Jenny & Aaron Fall Art Journal Part 2

Yesterday was a weird day. Yes, I know...don't you dislike the word "weird"? It's so vague, and it's one of those words that people use for filling in the blanks of an awkward situation. Another one of those filler words is "random". Oh jeez, I can't believe that I'm actually talking about which words peeve me. Can you tell that I had a very long night?
Let me at least touch upon one specific about yesterday: It was rainy and gray outside...and indoors it was stuffy and hot. These are some of the key ingredients for a stressful day. Did anyone else experience similar weather? Or can you at least recall a time when you have? It's such a bad combo...rainy, gray, stuffy, hot. And me and Aaron are both highly affected by weather, environment, and atmosphere. We are like walking mood rings, breathing thermometers, living weathervanes, dancing barometers.

Anyway, you may have noticed that this Thursday's post has arrived much later in the day than usual. And as I was saying...my reason for the delay is because yesterday was a "weird" day...and the weirdness just totally threw me and Aaron off schedule...and so the photo editing, instruction writing, etc...didn't get done until today. So we want to apologize big time to any of you who have come to rely upon the usual schedule of Art Journaling with Jenny & Aaron. We really did try our hardest to pull things together way into the wee hours last night (technically this morning)...but we simply couldn't.
So, here's your slightly tardy Thursday Art Journaling with Jenny & Aaron.

As with last week's class, we made a video slide show. Of course on it's own it only gives an idea of each step, so we included full detailed instructions for you to follow along. In the upper left corner of each photo in the slide show you'll see a title. In the instructions we've titled each step with those same titles so that you'll have an image to match each step. You can view the video once, or twice, or more...pause where you'd like, rewind, fast forward...watch it here on the blog, full screen, or on youtube.

Last week we began our Fall themed journal and as promised, this week is a little follow up...the first spread in the book. And what better way to start than with our morning tea ritual? We love the shape of this book and it's just the right size for our purposes. It's slightly smaller, and that's a good thing since we're really only focusing on the small details of what Fall means to us. The two of us having tea in the morning...it's one of the things I look forward to most. It's our time for planning out the day. And often we'll be flipping through magazines or catalogs...either for creative inspiration (Anthropologie) or in Aaron's case...a little bit of brain stimulation to prep him for the day ahead (The New Yorker).  We're so excited to see how your Theme Journals are coming along! Last week we did the cover, and this week shows the first layout inside. But next week we'll be putting the Fall Journal aside in order to switch back to our regularly scheduled programming. We've got something very cool in mind so be sure to check back! But this isn't the last you'll see of our Fall Journal...we'll continue to work on it and periodically I'll drop some pics into a blog post here and there.
Ok, now it's time to shake the weirdness get creative.

 ..............................................

gesso pages. The pages in this circular journal are a bit thinner than we're used to working with. So we're taking steps to bolster them a bit. And the first step in doing this is gesso. We brushed a thick coat onto both pages and let them dry.

trace page shapes. We'll also be bolstering both pages with a full sheet of patterned paper. So we first traced the shape of each page onto the patterned papers of our liking.

cut papers. Cut out the papers and get them in position.

adhere papers. To adhere, brush on a nice even coat of decoupage medium. Jenny's favorite is matte gel medium by Golden but to adhere these we actually used Mod Podge. For larger areas such as this we find Mod Podge to be easier to work with. It's thinner and a bit wetter, and that makes it easier to brush on. After you've brushed on a nice coat, then just lay your paper down on the wet Mod Podge, press down, smooth out wrinkles and bubbles.

when dry, seal. Let the pages dry fully. They are dry when they are no longer cool to the touch. When they dried we then sealed them matte gel medium by Golden.

trim edges. If any excess paper remains you'll be able to see it well if you flip your pages over. Then simply trim them off.

punch holes. We used a standard hole punch to punch through the binding holes that were already there.

save "confetti". You know what they say: "One mans trash..." We often save our left overs from punching holes. These ones are especially good because they come from a patterned paper. We have a little ziplock that we store our confetti in.

grab gesso & palette knife. The focal point of each page is the center so we want to apply a thick swatch of gesso as an undercoating to our photos etc..

apply gesso.  We were going for a messy, piled up look so we applied a thick coat of gesso with a palette knife. This textured effect worked even better because we used gesso by Deco Art, which is super thick and heavy.

let dry. While you let the gesso dry this is a good time to gather up some more elements that may have come to mind. Art Journaling is a process that is constantly in flux.

mix paint for stamping. We wanted to mix up a Fall color. Leafy but not too bold. Orangey but not firey. Tan and red and some white gave us exactly the tone we were looking for.

stamp both pages. Just brush your paint directly onto the stamp and then press down in the desired areas. We seem to never be looking for perfection. The sloppier, more scattered, the better.

add color wash. We wanted to mute everything. Give it all a Fall glow. Just mix up a tint and then add water to your palette.

apply to both pages. Then brush your wash onto the desired areas of your pages.

blot & dab wash. Little by little brush the wash onto the desired areas of your pages and then blot and dab with a clean paper towel. This will give you a nice glow.

speckle. Another trick that we always use. Just water down some paint, dip in your round detail brush, hold the brush about six inches above the page and simply tap the metal part of the brush, thus speckling the page with paint, the more sporadic the better.

speckle some more. We seem to always go back and add yet another color of speckling...we're betting that you'll do the same.

"distress" edges with paint. Simply rub paint on the edges of your pages. We call it distressing because it's similar to distressed edges of painted furniture. Only on furniture, the paint is rubbed off...but here, we're rubbing paint on. Use a paint brush or even your finger.

trace circles. This is one of our go-to tricks. Well, it's not a trick...but it's a great way to add a big punch of color and shape to a page. Just trace circles of varying sizes. Use bottle caps, or jars, or cans.

paint in circles. Using a 3/4 inch round brush paint in your circles. We went with white since our pages are all warm toned...we figured the white would be the bold punch we needed.

outline circles with watercolor pencil. Watercolor pencils are just so easy...just scribble around an image lightly.

"activate" pencil. Use your 3/4 inch brush...dip in water and then brush over your watercolor pencil lines, softening them and spreading the color out. This created a nice glow around the circles.

add paint dots. Dip a gluestick into paint and dab about your pages. The less perfect the better. This is about little punches of color. Barely noticeable at a glance but if you were to take these dots of color away you'd surely notice that your pages lack something.

do some doodling. We had a definite theme in mind...our morning tea. And we knew we were going to say the words "tea"...but we still needed a stand out image to drive the point home. We sketched out our two favorite monogrammed mugs on white paper and cut them out.

play with layout. We had an idea of where all of our elements would go...but m,any things changed at the last minute. That's why playing around with all of your imagery and scraps and photos is good.

adhere elements. Make your final decisions and then adhere them with decoupage medium.

washi tape time! Another crutch of ours. We love washi tape! It's perfect for running along the binding of the book...a great page transition. And add bits in the corners of photos for a scrapbooky feel.

add strips below photos. In this case we just needed a strip along the bottom of each photo. This was the one true bit of continuity between the pages.

write some words. Yup...words...we needed words...even though we've got the imagery that does the talking...we just love lettering...well, it is a journal after all. We wrote them out with a sharpie on a piece of watercolor paper and cut the words out.

adhere words. And then we decoupaged them to the pages.

add some painted elements. We wanted some movement and curvy shapes. We hand painted some steam rising from our mugs. Whats great is that there are no rules to steam. Just freehand it. We kinda went with a ribbony effect.

outline with sharpie pen. And to make our steam stand out against the multiple backgrounds it traverses we then outlined it with sharpie pen. In some spots we gave the steam a second coat of paint...and since we had already outlined it with the sharpie we made sure to use a fine brush so that we'd stay inside the lines.

looking good! Even though these pages are fairly small, we think they contain a bunch. This is a fun look.

feels good! Have you gotten your message across? Do you feel like you used the space well? Do you like your colors? Well, don't stop until all of your answers are YES.

Hooray! Yup...week 9! how amazing is that?! And you've got your first spread completed in your theme journal. So fun!

We simply cannot get over the fact that it's been 9 weeks of classes! And each week we're getting more and more heart warming emails from enthusiastic Art Journalers. The emails make us feel so good! In all of our work the one single thing that makes us happiest is hearing that we inspired someone to be creative...to make art...and to make art often. Some people tell us that since taking our classes they now have a brand new creative outlet...and that every time they feel stressed, etc...they'll reach for their Art Journal. We feel that there is no greater gift to give than the gift of Art. So...Please contact us and let us know your personal story. And please grab our button above to share on your blog or facebook...and be sure to leave a comment on this post and link up so that we can see your Art Journal! We've been blown away by the journals we've seen so far...can't wait to see more.
After these 9 weeks we feel that we can definitely step things up a bit and expand our creative process...add some new tools to our box. We know that you guys are ready for the challenge! Thanks so much again for inspiring us!

bits of life

I'm so happy to see that you guys are going to be following along with our kitchen makeover. Thanks so much for the words of encouragement regarding the previous post about my dream kitchen. This will be a period of sustained excitement...I can't imagine that we'll lose momentum on a project such as this. We hope to start with some paint within the next 2 weeks. And I'll be sharing all that good stuff with you guys...the nitty gritty and itty bitty details...paint swatches, lighting options, fab flea market finds, turning trash into treasure with some paint and TLC. I'm totally ready to talk HOUSE!

It's a rainy day here, one of our first chilly mornings of the season, and we got cozy on the couch with some hot tea. When we first moved in last winter I told you guys about our "coffee/tea/cocoa station"...our little island of happy, homey sanity amid the chaos. I think we've officially bid farewell to our iced coffee mornings. Now it's time to sample some of our fave Fall teas. Aaron bought a couple boxes of our good ol' standby's: English Breakfast and Chai...but we'd love to try some new varieties and brands. I know there must be some tea connoisseurs reading this. I think I can hear your spoons tinkling. So please, if you have any suggestions...we'd love to hear about them!

In the winter a gray day can be utterly depressing...but in the Fall, it's my favorite weather. I love starting the day out with the windows open...now the air is chilly enough to warrant a sweater. Just outside the window there are squirrels gathering nuts...in fact, I found some nut shells on the front steps yesterday. Just one more indication that it's time for my Fave Fall Fashion! Anthropologie's Fall catalog has arrived. What a dreamy little book. I still have every single one of them going back to the very first!

We have been blessed with some of the most awesome collectors of our work. Fantastic people who have been supporting us and what we do for years. Owners of Bakeries and Cafe's, and sweet souls who celebrate everyday at home!
Currently, we're busy making, and painting, and filling orders. The studio is pretty crazy right now. Since all of the table space seems to be occupied with one project or another we took to having to pack up our shipments on the floor...which means lots and lots of help from these little guys...

Each pup has got his own little packing day quirk. "Little" loves sitting on boxes when they are still flat...and when you try to slide it out from under him he'll look at you like "Mom, this is MY box...I'm sitting on this."
And then there's Carlos. He's all about the brown paper or tissue paper or newsprint. He loves to get buried under big piles of these.

Look how "Little" is sitting...side saddle! He makes me laugh so much. And that lily white chest! He looks so naked. No collar or shirt!  He somehow always smells delicious...like clean laundry! Why is he always so fresh smelling? Is it the white hair? His brother on the other hand, can sometimes smell like popcorn or corn chips!

Speaking of...here's the crazy old guy...who thinks this camera is out to steal his soul. I wish you could have seen this scenario play out. I go right with the camera...he looks left. I go left...he looks right. It is pure comedy!

So daddy had to scoop him up and make him surrender to the evil lens. He won't even look up! Haha...what a NUT!

And a hello hello to you! I'm a bit of a camera shy type of gal...but I snapped this pic to send to Marie...who sent me this adorable bow! Jeez, get a load of my very clean, just blow-dried puffy pink head!

Tomorrow will be a day of working on orders. Packing and shipping...oh, but that's not all. I almost forgot...we'll be Art Journaling as well! I'm so excited to work in our Fall Journal. We've got absolutely Nothing planned. We are just gonna sit down with a pile of pretty and inspiring papers, along with some other tids and bits...and just let it happen! That's the best way to go about it!
See you guys Thursday!

xo Jenny

The heart of the home (My kitchen Must-Haves)

I've said it a million times...when you are self employed, and work from home, it is so so easy to lose track of time. I know that so many of you guys can relate. Any life long professional artists, very busy etsy shop owners, or full time bloggers...you'll find yourself asking your "normal" friends who have "proper" jobs: "what DAY is it?"

There are a million obvious reasons for this...mainly having to do with the Groundhog's Day effect. One day melting into the next, repeating and repeating and repeating. That's why the past 8 or so months seem to have been a blur for me and Aaron. That's about the length of time that we've been living in this house. It feels as if the entire time we have been living here that we were on pause. Ok, well maybe not exactly on pause, but I'd say at least a very slow cruise control.

For anyone who is a newer reader...let me catch you up on how and why this came to be our house. Last Fall, Me and Aaron had an apartment in a beautiful town right on the ocean. We had been there for a few years and probably would've stayed there for many more. It was a small town full of giant white beach homes...old homes...many of them mansions and most of them were only inhabited during the summer. In the winter it felt like we had this charming little seaside village all to ourselves. We'd walk our pups the few blocks down to the ocean and just marvel at how gorgeous all of these big sleeping victorian homes were. And we even had a small downtown area...a great bakery, pizza parlor, post office, train station...all within walking distance...short walking distance...two blocks away!
Ok, so there we were, fairly set as far as location goes. And then...as things always seem to do...things changed.

My parents moved out of their home...sorta out of the blue...and bought land way far away in upstate New York. They decided that it was time for them to truly retire and begin their longtime dream of building a log cabin way out in the country. Now, they had very definite plans for their future home but nothing very solid in mind for the home that they were leaving behind. It was kinda in a limbo state. They put it on the market...but not with any real enthusiasm. Well, two of my brothers were still living there and it was assumed that they'd just stay there until the place sold, and then they'd find apartments or whatever. But who knew how long that would be?  They were both students, not working full time, and couldn't afford to keep up the payments, etc...

I'm am the oldest of five kids and when I thought about there being no more family home base I suffered a little twinge in my heart. All of us kids are all here at the Jersey Shore and we need a family headquarters. So I asked Aaron what he thought about stepping in and taking over the family home. OK, fast forward to...yes, that's exactly what we did. We moved in, my brothers became our roommates. And soon after, even my sister, who was living in Brooklyn, moved in too. For her it was an interim dwelling. A financial buffer zone between where she was living and where she would soon be living. So ok, I'm bringing all of this up for a reason. Remember how I said that the past 8 months have been a blur...our life on slow cruise control? Well, I mean that we just weren't settled into anything solid yet. And the reason that I'm bringing this up now is that I think we are finally feeling some firmer ground underfoot. My sister's interim stay here has come to a close...she is now in her new apartment. My brother Jay decided to move in with my parents way way upstate to help them build the log cabin, and me and Aaron are here, along with my brother Walt, and I think we're finally about to make this into our home. We've been here for 8 or so months but everything felt in flux...so we couldn't really put our mark on the place. We did a lot of temporary quick fixes...which I showed here on the blog. But nothing big. Nothing that truly says Jenny and Aaron live here.

Well, I guess we put a little bit of effort into the living room. Giving two walls our signature hand painted stripes, and painting one wall with an oversized vintage wallpaper pattern. But this house won't be our home until we do the KITCHEN. For us, that is the heart and soul of our home and we won't feel comfortable until we get the kitchen right from top to bottom. Luckily, we are starting out with a good bone structure. My dad built the cabinets, we've got wood floors, and a great big 'ole stainless steel commercial stove. As far as the wood floors go, they need refinishing, and I'm not sure if we're gonna stain them black or figure out a way to have my absolute fave kitchen floor treatment...black and white check.

It's exciting to finally be at this stage of development. We feel on the verge, the end of the diving board, and we're ready to take the plunge. I've been pinning like crazy and referencing some of my favorite old magazine tear sheets. We're gonna tap the gas peddle and get us out of that slow cruise control. We'll make sure to chronicle it all along the way with tutorials, diy's etc...
And now here are some of our Must Haves...

Chalkboard Walls

The dining room comes right off of the kitchen and I'd love an entire chalkboard wall at the far end of the dining room. It's a very small wall with a window in the center of it and I think a black wall will be perfect...and then adorning it with chalk artwork??? too perfect! We've been painting menu boards for years...in homes, bakeries, cafes...and we just love the look. We were thrilled when the decor world went chalkboard paint crazy! We'll never get sick of it! Classic!

 Black Pendant Lighting

I'm certainly a pastel gal...cupcakes, frosting, aprons and crochet potholders. But I need black! For me it actually makes everything else sweeter! Just go with basic white or cream, with black fixtures and accents...it's the perfect starting point for our look. It's just clean and classic...and it balances the many sweet pastels that I'll be adding. I adore pendant lighting in black. These strong fixtures will ground my whimsy.

Painted metal chairs

We've been a fan of these forever. I don't even need a full set. Even just one of them added to the mix works for me. I love the look. And again, it's all about being classic and sturdy and familiar.

Checkered Floors

We had them in one of our apartments but it barely counts...the kitchen was tiny and had no charm at all. Actually, all the charm was in the checked floors. They are the definition of classic kitchen. You'll find them in an astonishing array of venues...from a tiny retro cafe, to a grand old high ceilinged estate. I just love the bold graphic.

We're looking forward to writing this chapter of our domestic development. We hope you'll follow along with us. What are your kitchen Must Haves? What is the beating heart of your home?
xo, Jenny
