So, let me tell you about my new bag...

Ok, so this past Friday Favorites I shared an adorable pink bag with you (no I haven't ordered it...still debating the whole pink thing.) I also mentioned that I recently purchased a new aqua bag. Well here it is!
At the core I'm a gal who really only carries a black bag...though I do have two really well loved classic leopard print bags I turn to for Fall. ( I view leopard as a neutral...almost an equivalent to black) Gosh I think I got the leopard print bags at Banana Republic yeeeeears ago. Anyways, I've been looking to expand my palette a bit but not by much...just looking to get a bag in one of my forever and ever mainstay colors...and that is Aqua. In my search for the perfect aqua handbag I came across this one on Ruche and I was sooo excited! It's called the Ocean Romance Purse. Described as having impossibly soft pebbled faux leather with a spacious interior...both of these details would make my ideal bag checklist . And the color was perfection. And the price was great. So...I ordered it! And you know me. Little Miss Frugal. It was bound to become my FAVE bag ever!

It arrived...and ohh yes...it is BIG! And yes, very very soft! The color is BEAUTIFUL! Lots of pockets and the optional shoulder strap is fantastic. Doesn't this all sound like I'm setting you guys up for a "but..."?

If you said yes...you'd be correct. There is a "but...". And this is it...This tricky little BRAT of a zipper!! I wasn't able to zip it past that crooked "tooth". Overall, the zipper itself seems quite chinsy. So I'm really torn here. I LOOOVE the bag! But the zipper is a lemon. And I'm thinking that this may happen to anyone who orders this bag...not like mine is faulty. The fault is in the cheap quality of the zipper.  So if I send the bag back, and exchange it for another one...I really think this may happen again.
So what do I do? Just live with it...and not zip it all the way closed? As I type this my face is all crinkled and squinched up like a disappointed 6 year old. I've googled "fixing" zippers...but geez. That's a whole other can o' worms. What do you guys think? Jeez, what a beautiful bummer.

Random...but I am psyched about the show REVOLUTION starting tonight. Aaron and I have high hopes.

Some Sweet & Spooky Halloween Art

This is my favorite time of year...well maybe I'm jumping the gun a bit. October is probably more accurate, it being my birthday month. But right now the leaves are starting to change, the nights are getting much cooler, and you gotta start getting your Halloween stuff out. So that's why I wanted to put this post out there. We've got some new and one of a kind Halloween art that we're very excited about. This girl you see above...Holly Holiday...expect her to make appearances all year round, but for now she's all set for All Hallows Eve. She's an original painting and she's actually available over at Spooky Time Jingles. We're thrilled to be a part of it. STJ is an online gallery full of artists who specialize in Holiday art...mainly Halloween and Christmas...hence the name Spooky Time Jingles. And everything at STJ is an original. So go over there if you'd like to grab the original canvas painting of Holly

...or, if you're looking for something more affordable, we've got Holly in our shop as a print mounted on an 8 x 10 wooden plaque and the plaques look absolutely fabulous!
We've also got some other new seasonal stuff available in our shop. Scroll down to check those out.

"TRICK or TREAT"
We've got some classic old school Halloween cat toppers and we just had to do a painting showcasing one of 'em. We made prints of our original painting and mounted them to square wooden plaques. They look perfect (the pic you see here has rounded corners but our plaques now have squared off corners.)...the prints are totally equal to the original painting. Find it here.

"Party Raven"

You may know our "Well Read Raven" painting...it's one of our faves. Well, we asked Mr. Raven if he'd like to moonlight as a model for our new Halloween painting. We thought he worked perfectly with a party hat...and the aqua ribbon he wears around his neck turned out to be the exact amount of color contrast we were looking for in this otherwise traditional Halloween color scheme. This too is a print mounted on an 8 x 10 wooden plaque. With the party hat, the bunting, and those polka dots...this is one festive little vignette! Find him here.

"Halloween Cupcakes"

"Haunted House Cake"

Two Everyday is a Holiday classics! Back by popular demand. Our "Halloween Cupcakes" and our "Haunted House Cake" both come matted and ready to frame. We do theme cupcakes just like these for just about every holiday and we also have big theme cakes for all year round. It's always a close race between which is our fave to paint...Halloween or Christmas. I honestly cannot commit.

And if you'd like to do some Halloween crafting yourself, we have this super fun collage kit for you!

A vintage class portrait that we had some witchcrafty fun with.  :)   It comes with detailed instructions and can be made by anyone who possesses even a smidge of the crafting bug. Create with a friend, make a day of it. In the end you'll have a fab piece of wall art that you'll be so very proud of. All you need to supply is a bit of enthusiasm, a pair of scissors, a couple paint brushes, some mod podge (or medium of your choice) and a bit of glue.

kit includes:
9 x 12 canvas board
an assortment patterned papers
watercolor paper
plastic spider web
crepe paper
a print of a vintage hand painted class photo
rick rack
paper discs
school insignia
detailed instructions

Here's a little video we made to show you a bit more...

I hope these pieces have helped to put you in a festive mood. Bring on the romance of Autumn...the dramatic skies, and colorful foliage, and lots of new layers being added to our wardrobes...this really is MY TIME of year! And again, if you are interested...all of these Spooky & Sweet creations are in the shop now!
Thanks so much for stopping in!

let's make an itsy bitsy confetti garland

To say that I am a big fan of confetti is an understatement. Seriously, I love everything about it. Even the word itself...Confetti...isn't it such a fun word? For years we tossed handfuls of pink hearts and gold stars in our boxes when shipping out orders. We'd often get emails from customers letting us know that they cannot stop thinking about us...not just because they love staring at their sweet art hanging in their kitchen but because they and their family have been tracking sparkly hearts through their homes for days! One time when we had a store we sent out a little promotion via snail mail. Inside the envelope we included coupons and a newsletter, and for good measure we'd throw in our usual handful of confetti. Well, a little while after the mailers went out we received a phone call from a very nervous past customer of ours. It turns out that they got an envelope in the mail and the only thing inside the envelope was a handful of confetti. That's right...no coupon...no newsletter...just confetti. They knew the envelope was from us because it said so on the return address. Apparently we lost track of things while we were stuffing the hundreds of envelopes and forgot to include the most important contents. Anyway, this was right around the time of the Ricin and Anthrax scare...when the nation was feeling threatened by something as innocuous as a birthday card in the mail. When on the news they told us to be wary of any powdery substances in envelopes. So, when this customer of ours got an envelope sans everything but a tiny handful of confetti...I guess we could sorta sympathize with her nervousness. The emotional climate of the whole world was wacky at that time...it's gotta be the first and last time that someone feared for their life over some pink glitter and gold stars!

Anyways...confetti! I LOVE it! Don't be scurred!
I love adding happy little extras to journal pages and thought that an itsy bitsy confetti garland could be an adorable little addition! and I think I was right. :)

I make paper garlands all the time...to hang from my mantel, or shelves, or over windows. We have paper punches of all shapes and sizes here in the studio and use them often! But this isn't an ordinary paper garland. I like to imagine that the miniature little family of borrowers living in our walls has a crafty daughter who's latest project was influenced by my paper garlands. It really is a perfect scaled down replica of one of my garlands.
For these little paper punch outs I used a classic hole punch. My goal was to make a garland as tiny as possible but the same rules apply no matter what size your garland is.You can use just about any size or shape punch.

Here's what you need for this eeeeasy lil project:

thread or twine ( I used gold thread)
hole punch
assorted pretty papers
modpodge or glue
fine paintbrush or Qtip
washi tape (to attach garland to journal pages)

Gather up some pretty papers. I used about 10 different colors/patterns. Punch away while watching tv or listening to some good music!

Using a fine tipped paint brush and mod podge, dot each little circle and sandwich a pair around the thread. Spacing evenly as you go...and go, and go, and go.

You could really go for an hour and have a bunch to use in future projects, or you could make just enough for today's journal page. I ended up making a bunch and wrapped my extra garland around a wooden spool for future use. I think I will make a bunch more in different color ways.

Washi tape and confetti are a very happy mix, am I right? Total eye candy!

I cut tiny little rectangles of washi tape to adhere my itsy bitsy garland to my journal pages. I love the FUN it brings to this page! And I love the whole concept of a confetti garland. It's like we tamed the confetti. Confetti is used to running free all over the place...making a pretty mess. But we put it on a tiny leash of gold thread...figuratively and literally keeping it in line!

This page really needed this little pop of FUN don't you think? Now it's ready for some journaling!

I'll be making more of these for sure. In all sorts of color combos...and sizes! I'm planning one with penny sized circles and I think I'll store it wrapped around a TP roll. I'm the kind of crafting weirdo that loves the idea of these sorts of things lined up on shelves. Yes I'm a cheap date. Doesn't take much! :)

I'm thinking of other fun ways to use these garlands. I think they'd be adorable used in gift wrapping.
If you make your own itsy bitsy confetti garland I'd love to see it.

Thanks for popping in!
Enjoy your Day!

Friday Favorites

This week was one of the biggest "catch up" weeks ever. I know I sound like a broken record but that power outage was such a stick in the spokes, a kink in the hose, such rain on our parade. We still have sooo much to do and my email inbox is SCARY! I'm trying so hard to chip away at replies. If you have emailed me/us I promise I will get back to you as soon as I can. This weekend will be all about organizing, planning, and preparing for the coming week. I know it sounds weird but I look forward to it. I'm not into question marks...and the more organized you are, the more answers you have.

It's a very pleasant 75 and Sunny with a breeze here on the NJ Shore. The windows are open, and I have my Pumpkin Cupcake candle burning. Aaron just went to ship a batch of orders and I am finishing up a teeny tiny tutorial for tomorrow. Let the weekend begin!

Now for some Friday Favorites...

This dress above is just so incredibly darling. The tiny dots are so sweet and the bands and bows of black are details I'd include if this were a dress on one of our pretty girl paintings. The flowy arms with cuffs are ideal for this perfect weather we're having . Pair it with black tights, along with some platform Mary Janes and you've got a smashing fair weather ensemble.

I most often carry a black bag, with the exception of a pretty aqua one that I just purchased (I'll share that with you soon). When you have pink hair it is actually quite hard to find pinks that work. Most will clash and can end up looking too purpley pink or peachy. So going pink on pink is tough, unless you go for an explosion of pink from head to toe. I mostly wear all black with bits of cream, and pops of aqua, thus letting my hair stand alone. But this bag has me second guessing myself. I just might go for the pink explosion. Isn't it super cute?

The name of this here mouth watering slice of heaven is Triple Chocolate Pumpkin Pie! Could you die? I was introduced to the chocolate/pumpkin combo a few years back. I have to admit that I was hesitant at first, but proved to be a very quick convert. One bite and I was hooked! This recipe is certainly on my Fall baking list!

Ohh I adore this! Everything about it! At one point, ohhh about a decade or so ago, Aaron and I had a decidedly Shabby Chic meets industrial look going on. Our apartment was nearly all white with tans and sepia and greys and lots of metal. We made our curtain rods with conduit piping and used crumply white cotton that we tea stained for curtains, securing them to the rod with metal clips and big metal rings. It was such a fabulous look! This table would have been a perfect fit in that apartment. I think I would have filled it with doll heads, or maybe big seashells in the summer. Nowadays I think I'd keep it in the studio filled to the brim with favorite trims and ribbons and scraps.

And last but not least on this list of Friday Favorites...Paris in Autumn. Need I say more? One day! I vow! One day!

Happy Friday my friends! Wishing you guys a lovely, relaxing, fun weekend!

bits of life

I couldn't ask for more perfect weather. I am a 74 and Sunny girl through and through. And see this little guy here? This is Jack, aka "little", aka "shirt"... well it turns out that he is totally on my page. It has cooled off a bit around here. It's still sunny as heck, but the cool breezes of September have arrived, and that means that Jack can resume his habit of wearing a shirt 24/7...thus earning his nickname : "Shirt". For newer readers, Shirt, real name Jack, is the little ginger chihuahua you see above. He has been a part of our life for a little over 2 years (got him in July 2010).  He's a little mooshball that could spend all day buried under his blankies in his "good boy bed". On most days we will see him for the very first time at around dinner time! I kid you not. He loves to sleep in! Daily, we tell him that he is a weirdo. His brother Carlos on the other hand is our shadow. Never, not for one second, do we have to wonder where Carlos is. He's most likely under foot or sitting right next to us on the couch. His favorite thing is to be haphazardly buried under packing materials as we pack up orders to be shipped. He too is a weirdo.

Anyway, back to my tale about Little. We noticed that for the past couple of days he's been springing up from bed and running right to the front door. So we let him and Carlos out for their morning constitutional...they trot around the front yard, do their business quickly, and then they zip back up the steps to come inside for their morning "treatie reatie". Only for the past two days Jack does not zip up the steps to come back inside. He watches Carlos go in the house, but decides that he'd rather linger out there in the grass and soak up the sunshine. Yes, he is a 74 and sunny type of guy. No more sleeping in for him...no more quick stop outside. Now he wants to savor the weather! But we can't have him standing out there all day...we have work to do. We had to go out there...grab him...and carry him back indoors. But then guess what happened? He stood in the middle of the livingroom crying and staring at us! Haha! This little boy wanted to go back out! This is the same kid who would usually still be buried under blankets until maybe 5pm! But the sweltering, stifling, summer days are gone now...and he wants to enjoy the weather. Well, we could offer him the next best thing...we scooped him up and placed him in his favorite chair. It's right next to an open window and he can bathe in a little pool of sunshine all day.

Ok, more fair weather news...these here are our tomatoes. We never got around to planting them in the garden, so we read up on container gardening, and it turns out that the big pots that they're in worked just fine. They were a sort of house warming gift from Aaron's dad. We didn't know what to expect from these plants...didn't know how many tomatoes they'd yield...didn't know if they were getting too much sun exposure...etcetera. We researched them a bit...they're  Ramapo tomatoes, which were developed right here in Jersey at Rutgers University back in 1968. They quickly became a gardener's favorite due to their wonderful flavor, fruit quality, and reliability. But for years they totally disappeared from the market. This is because they are a pretty supple fruit and the commercial produce industry wanted to produce tomatoes that were firmer and shipped better. But local public demand grew and a couple years ago the Ramapo tomato made it's return. And good for us! Although our plants didn't produce a ton of fruit, the ones we got were absolutely deeelish!

I so so love this sign! I've got it hanging in our livingroom. I know it's got a pretty basic premise, but I really feel a connection to all of the references. I feel like I'm a dedicated practitioner of all the things mentioned in the text. You know what I mean?...like, I know these are common things...PB and J...icing on a cupcake...bubbles in my bath. I'm not extravagant...not drawn to the decadent things in life...I'm a lover of simple, common things. And that's why if you are the ketchup to my french fries...you are a big deal!
If you too can identify, you can purchase this sign where I purchased mine...get one for yourself from  Jenny Elkins

Just in case you can't tell what this is a picture of...it is a screen shot of Doctor Who paused. Me and Aaron decided that we needed some light entertainment that we could get lost in at the end of long days. Well I think we found just ticket...Doctor Who! Yes, you've heard of him. This is the updated version of the show from our childhood. I know I must have some readers who are part of the Doctor Who cult. Me and Aar just started so I can't yet say if we are going to be addicted. We watched the first 2 episodes (2005) last night. And get this...Netflix has 6 seasons available to watch instantly!

Ok, just thought I'd check in with a little slice of the everyday doings of Everyday is a Holiday. Some of our "off duty" fun. I'd love to hear about what you guys are up to in your downtime moments...you know...the crazy habits of your dogs...your kids...how your garden grows...what tv series gets you through the week...all the meaningless stuff that means so much.

Art Journaling with Jenny & Aaron Class 6

Welcome to another installment of Art Journaling with Jenny & Aaron! After a craaaazy week last week we are now back on schedule. And it feels good. We love to have this weekly class in our lives. A chance to reconnect with you guys and let loose creatively. Sure, there is some hard work involved, but as artists we are also spoiling ourselves a bit. You'd be surprised how little time there is for getting creative in the life of a self supporting artist. You'd think that each day is about making art...but no...most time is spent doing all the things that surround the artistic process. All the busy work that would bore most of you guys silly. So, cracking open our journals each week to share some creative time with you guys is a blessing. Thanks so so much for being there with us and for all of your positive feedback. You guys mean the world to us!

As with previous classes, we made a video slide show. Of course on it's own it only gives an idea of each step, so we included full detailed instructions for you to follow along. In the upper left corner of each photo in the slide show you'll see a title. In the instructions we've titled each step with those same titles so that you'll have an image to match each step. You can view the video once, or twice, or more...pause where you'd like, rewind, fast forward...watch it here on the blog, full screen, or on youtube.

As you can notice at a glance, this spread has a pretty distinct theme. And I'm not usually a distinct theme type of girl. I like to let vibes and happy accidents dictate many of my creative endeavors. But this time around I had a specific goal for these pages. And that's: My Grandma's Roses. Simple as that. And I couldn't go wrong. Roses have always been a fave subject for Aaron and I to paint. And I had this fantastic old photograph to work with. Yes, that's my mom on my grandma's lap! I love that picture. My Grandma's makeup is so pretty and my mom still looks just like that itty bitty girl.
So, this week, if me and Aar were going to influence you in any way, I'd say try to work with a specific theme. Think of something you'd like to journal about...or that you'd like to capture visually...gather the needed supplies...the specific colors...and go. You'll find that working within a theme is just as fun as going freestyle. There's a bit of a comfort in it...something to fall back on...and in the end you'll find that it all came together so simply.

gather pretty papers and bits. Like I said, Grandma's Roses was my theme. I had some vintage rose wall paper, some Victorian style rose die cuts, rose playing cards, a garden club prize ribbon, and the photo...and tons of fitting stuff. So do yourself a favor and pick a theme that you are well stocked in.

back images with watercolor paper. Any image that I had that I wanted to be important on the page, I first adhered it to watercolor paper using a decoupage medium.

weight down stencil. Again, Aaron rolled his eyes at my use of butter knives. You can use much more subtle ways of holding your stencil in place...bits of tape in the corners, etc...But I was working fast and I only cared about capturing enough of the stencil pattern in the middle of the page.

grab your color mist. We used Mister Huey's in Piglet.

mist and remove stencil. Spray your stencil from about 6 - 10 inches away. And mist according to how dark you want your pattern to be. As you'll see with this spread, I later mute this pattern with a gesso wash, so don't worry if you spray darker than you wanted to. You can adjust.

lay out papers. This step might involve more thinking if you are going with a theme. Because you want to make sure that certain images are in places of importance, etc...

adhere papers, let dry. Using your fave decoupage medium adhere each piece by brushing a thick coat on the page, laying down your paper, and then smoothing out. Let dry before applying topcoat.

seal papers. Now that the papers are dry, apply a topcoat of the medium of your choice. I used Golden Matte Gel Medium.

stamp a pattern. In the area I purposely left blank I used a large polka dot stamp to fill in some pattern. I used paint, which I haphazardly brushed onto the stamp because I'm not going for a pristine look.

tone down ink with gesso wash. As I said above, I wanted the pattern that I misted on to be a little less vibrant. So I mixed a little water and gesso together on my palette and brushed the wash over the pattern.

trace circles. This is one of our go-to tricks. Well, it's not a trick...but it's a great way to add a big punch of color and shape to a page. Just trace circles of varying sizes. Use bottle caps, or jars, or cans.

paint in circles. Using a 3/4 inch round brush paint in your circles. Try to use colors that appear other places on you page...like if there is a tiny hint of pale green on a leaf and you want to showcase that color...then fill in a big circle with a matching paint color.

speckle. Another trick that we always use. Just water down some paint, dip in your round detail brush, hold the brush about six inches above the page and simply tap the metal part of the brush, thus speckling the page with paint, the more sporadic the better.

do some stamping. Stamps and ink are another great layer for your spread. This ring stamp I have resemble my bottle cap stamps but on a closer look you see that it a more detailed image.

grab your watercolor pencils. I absolutely love watercolor pencils. You get to doodle and then turn your doodles into paint.

blend with a brush and water. Use your 3/4 inch brush...dip in water and then brush over your watercolor pencil lines, softening them and spreading the color out. This created a nice glow around the color circles.

outline the flowers. Watercolor pencils are just so easy...just scribble around an image lightly.

blend with brush and water. Again ,with a wet brush just brush over your pencil lines and turn them into a washy glow.

"distress" edges with paint. Simply rub paint on the edges of your pages. We call it distressing because it's similar to distressed edges of painted furniture. Only on furniture, the paint is rubbed off...but here, we're rubbing paint on. Use a paint brush or even your finger.

adhere main images. You've chosen where they'll appear, now brush on you medium, lay down your images and press down to adhere them.

add some gluestick paint dots. Dip a gluestick into paint and dab about your pages. The less perfect the better. This is about little punches of color. Barely noticeable at a glance but if you were to take these dots of color away you'd surely notice that your pages lack something.

washi tape time! Another crutch of mine. I love washi tape! It's perfect for running along the binding of the book...a great page transition. And add bits in the corners of photos for a scrapbooky feel.

consider your pages. You've picked a theme and planned it out, but a spread doesn't come together until you're actually doing it. Get up, walk away, and come back to your book and you'll see whatever is missing.

grab your sharpie pen. Never forget to doodle with a sharpie pen. Outline roses, leaves, photos, etc...

stamp a letter or two. Again, this stamp was in my plans from the outset. A big "R" for Roses and for my Grandma's name...Rita!

add a wash of color. I wanted a little bit of an antique glow in the corner. The page needed some warmth. Just mix paint and water, brush on and dab away.

add some pretty trims. Fabric trims add a very special and necessary layer to your pages. You've got so much paper and paint going on...the fabric trims soften everything up.

add some cap circles. Yes, cap circles are a big part of my look. In this case I wanted dark rings and light rings overlapped. They look fab. Just brush paint on the rim of a bottle cap and then press the cap onto the page.

looking good! It is certainly getting close to done and you've got most of your elements laid down.

liking it! You've got lots of layers and colors and the theme is represented well...but something is needed...what is it?

add some words. Yup...words...you needed words...a big statement to carry your theme home. In this case I wanted big letters that stood out. So I wrote them out with a sharpie on a piece of watercolor paper, cut the words out and decoupaged them to the page.
looks good! It's nearly done, so look hard...and think about your theme.

date your pages. You're proud of your pages and you want to capture this moment in time...you want to be able to look back at these pages and remember where you were in your life when you rendered these. So please, date your pages...and do it in a pretty way.

Hooray! Another week of Art Journaling with Jenny and Aaron! We couldn't be more excited!

Current Beauty Faves

I couldn't wait to share both of these with you guys. The skin care and beauty product market is HUGE...just endless options and you don't know who to trust or what to believe. So whenever I come across products that work for me I want to tell everyone I know. I cannot say enough good things about Benefit's b.right! Radiant skin care collection! When I saw that they offered a mini 6 piece intro set I was so excited to try it. I'd read lots of positive reviews about the collection and I couldn't wait to get my hands on it...especially the Total Moisture. I have dry skin and I've used countless brands, at varying price points, consistently exfoliating and moisturizing to no avail. But then this adorable little set came along and I can honestly say that within one week of using it I have absolutely no dry patches! My skin is noticeably brighter and smoother. Since I've been using the entire set in my daily regimen I don't think I can narrow it down to one specific product that's doing the trick for me. All I know is that as a collection it has worked wonders.

This set Includes:
foamingly clean facial wash 8.9 g Net wt. 0.3 oz.
refined finish facial polish 8.9 g Net wt. 0.3 oz.
moisture prep toning lotion
triple performing facial emulsion SPF 15 PA++ 8.9 mL / 0.3 US fl. oz.
total moisture facial cream 3.0 g Net wt. 0.1 oz.
it's potent! eye cream 3.0 g Net wt. 0.1 oz.

The  bottles are tiny, I'd say hotel size. I think the price is great...$24.00. It has a lovely fragrance...what more can I say? I am sold on this collection. Everyone's skin is different so what works for me may not work for you. I have a fair complexion that is often dry and this is by far my favorite skin care collection.

I'm sure many of you have already witnessed the Buzz surrounding the Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains from Revlon. Thousands of beauty bloggers can't be wrong! right? So I just had to try them for myself. Judging from what I saw on vids and from any swatches I'd seen on blogs, Honey seemed like such a pretty shade. And it is indeed! I have naturally quite pink lips, and this tone is my lips but better. I've been wearing it daily and I'd say that's what it is perfect for...a light & pretty look for everyday wear.

From the Revlon site:
It’s a pampering balm fused with a lightweight lipstain in an adorable chubby crayon. Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain gives softer, smoother lips with a perfect flush of color that lasts hour after hour. The gel formula comes in 12 vibrant shades that match any look or mood.

Ok, thanks for reading. I'm happy I was able to share these with you guys. Have you recently tried any beauty products that have surpassed expectations? I'd love to hear about it!
