Adventures in Abstraction

So yesterday was one of those catch up and get organized days. Lots of digging for paperwork, making phone calls, sitting on hold, emails, throwing away magazines and catalogs, Aaron cleared the winter clothes out of his closet and put a thousand books in there instead...you know the kind of day I'm talking about. Its not hard work, but it seems to coil around your spine a bit. So we had to decompress. We cooked an early dinner and afterwards went right into the studio to make art.
The plan was to paint...but the tricky part for Aaron is that we were going to paint in a non-representational style. This has been my go-to style for a long time. This is how I paint when I paint for me. Aaron works like this, but mainly he does it for backgrounds of mixed media collages. He's really an illustrator in his heart...he designs and paints stuff that have a very finished product/greeting card quality to them. So, seriously...there was a big pause before he could even put the first drops of paint to canvas. He's a planner and a sketcher...so having no plans was a little odd for him. Well, I can't say we were completely plan free...the one loose rule is that we wanted all three pieces to hang together and sorta have some unity in theme and color.
Above are the results of last evening and this morning. Mine is the large one on bottom and the two up top are Aar's. He cheated a bit on the little square piece...there's definitely some form to his freestyle...but close enough ; )

I feel like you will know my work from a mile away. The colors, the polka dots, the speckling. The key is to surround yourself with colors, tools, and mediums that you like to work with. Then let the art speak through your hands.

Here's where me and Aaron maybe differ from a lot of artists...We are always open to each other's suggestions. Even if it's not a collaborative work...we still keep our ears open for advice. The thing is...he trusts me and I trust him. Above, you can see the thick paint work Aaron did with a palette knife. While he let it dry a bit I told him he should see what he could add to it with a charcoal pencil. Here he is fading some of his pencil lines.

Aaron really likes his paint to have a physical presence. He adds loads of molding paste and heavy gel medium right onto his paint filled brush.

And here you can see I'm way more color-shape-pattern...and the way you can make these three things play off each other. I just love to cover something up and to see it peek back through. Look at how the crosshatch of Distress Ink in the top left corner seems to bleed through the layers of color.

Here again you can see the magic of Distress Ink...and also just how much I like pops of color all piled up and peeking out from behind one another. Aaron kinda works the entire canvas...while I like to flit from section to section to create multiple points of interest.

At one point we got pretty tired out and both decided to call it a night and watch a movie. Then we re-entered the studio this morning to get a look at our work with fresh eyes. I highly recommend this tactic. Above you can see that the morning light through the window was great...and we both had brand new energy to work with.

Again, Aaron the thinker, first took time to contemplate his next moves while enjoying a strawberry pineapple smoothie.

Here's the thing with painting in this style...A whole lotta people are scared to work in this way. I always hear about people not knowing where to begin. And it's a valid fear...that big empty canvas can be daunting. So let me offer a tip that I work with...Don't approach the canvas with an ideal picture in your mind. You will never match it...you'll never live up to your ideal. In fact, try to think sorta opposite of that. I often just think about what I DON'T want it to look like. I focus on the avenues that I plan on steering clear of. And then I surround myself with the stuff I love and work from there.
For Aaron, he likes to choose a feeling, or phrase, or song. And with the song he's pretty much focusing on a certain phrase in it, and the feeling that the song gives him. Above is the title of his little square piece...based on a lyric from one of his favorite Strokes songs...hear below.

Another example of approaching your work with fresh eyes. Last night Aaron had hit a stand-still...and this morning, the second he saw his piece he went in search of this bird. He saw his random paint dots as a spiraling flock fleeing a pink city. (see what I mean?...even if the painting started out as random...he still let his revisionist brain trick him and make it into a landscape of sorts.)

I just love painting and covering, painting and covering. When I felt like I had painted and covered enough I then laid on some heavy gel medium to make it soft and cloudy and filmy.

And you can't see it too well in this photo...but I embedded some German glass glitter in the gel medium. Little focal points like this just make it. It's so cool to make the surface of your work able to reflect tiny bits of light. In person your eye really does catch these little details.

When we ship our artwork out to customers we always put some of this glittered aqua tissue paper in the box. Aaron thought it would be perfect to wrap the sides of his piece with. He just cut and tore pieces and decoupaged them on and then sanded the edges off.

My piece, entitled "Just don't go off the deep end" is on a wood panel measuring 12 x 24.

Aaron's larger piece is on an 11 x 14 canvas and is titled "disappear here". Below is a detail shot of the center of his canvas.

And his little guy is on a 6 x 6 wood panel...the title is right there plain as day..."I like it right here but I cannot stay."

We hope you enjoyed this peek into our process. And more than anything we hope we've given you at least a teeny bit of inspiration to go and get creative with some paint...totally freestyle...non-representational...and completely cathartic, transportive, stimulating, and restorative to your soul.

We'd love to see what you've been up to lately! Feel free to put a link to your latest mixed media adventures in our comments. And if you have any questions...feel free to ask!

life lately... ( and the winner of our Mixed Media Girl canvas)

This past week we got a look at the finalized version of our book and it was so exciting to see the culmination of the time and effort we put in over the past few months. We had shared our Dedication page on facebook and we were overwhelmed by all of the kind and supportive words from everyone. It really means so so much to us when we hear about someone pre-ordering it. Of course the idea of a book is to get it in as many hands as possible...but we really hope that ours is one you can really USE...one you can reference a bunch and go back to again and again to make an all new project. You don't write a book like this for yourself...this isn't a show and tell type of book. It's more like a 'get-down-and-dirty-right-alongside-us' type of book.

We were especially psyched to see finally see the cover...front and back. We had designed the front cover ourselves and saw that a while back...but we were wondering how the back cover would come out. Well, we love it! And seeing how the spine represents the color scheme so perfectly and that if it's peeking out on the shelf you'll see the black striped washi tape trim. This is a book that would certainly intrigue us enough to pull it out of the stacks at the book store. We hope you guys feel the same.

One day this past week we took a bit of time to do some blog stuff. One thing being the addition of a new page titled "Our Home".  Aaron did this sweet little painting of our house for the header. The "Our Home" page will be the place where you'll find our favorite home decor, DIY, and renovation posts.

This little munchkin is our niece Olivia. This weekend my family gathered for the funeral of my Uncle Lou. And as sad as this occasion was, it is always a great thing to get together with my extended family. We don't see each other nearly enough and catching up with everyone is so essential. After the wake on Friday me and Aaron got together with my brother Walt and his girl Val for some late night mini golf. It was soopa doopa mega hot and humid, with mosquitoes galore...but still super fun! Though we must admit that as the game wore on we were all definitely looking forward to the 18th hole.

So then yesterday was the Funeral, the church service and the cemetery...and afterwards the family got together to eat and hang out for hours. Then after that we all piled in cars and went down to my brother Rich's house where this little cutie Olivia lives! When we arrived she was in the Tubby! It was just too cute for words. She is always smiling and joking with you. Funniest little thing ever. And she's now walking all over the place.
Rich & Steph have a big sectional, and when we all get together there isn't an inch to spare. We're all packed in, it gets super loud with stories and jokes, and youtube videos, and Vine favorites...and snacks come around. It is a GREAT time! Olivia gets passed from person to person all night long...and she power napped earlier just so she could hang out all night. We were there till almost midnight.
Today me and Aaron nearly feel hungover from just the total sensory overload of the weekend. We are pretty much shut-ins during our normal life...and then this weekend it was just people people people...and so much going on. We're taking today to gear up for the coming week. Lots of cleaning and organizing.

As sad as it is to have to say goodbye to a loved one, the gathering together of family is an undeniably very good thing.

How was your weekend? Did you keep the July 4th festivities going?

Thanks for popping in!!

Too Good to be True (Gluten Free) Black Bean Brownies

These brownies are our newest addiction. Not kidding. We've made them twice in a week and again for this blog post! And if you follow our cooking adventures you know that we really like to try some fun recipes, maybe with a bit of a twist and an unexpected ingredient or two. Sneaking some undercover veggies into a recipe when we can, like our I can't believe it's good for me Mac & Cheesewhich calls for butternut squash in the place of butter or heavy cream. And also our Fudgy Zucchini Brownies, that were so chocolatey and delicious you'd never know they contained a generous amount of zucchini. Well these guys right here might do our zucchini brownies one better. Because even without frosting these are super rich and fudgy...they're almost truffle-like in the center.
Pretty sure the moist goodness is due to the black beans...which you DO NOT taste at all!
It's so cool that these can be so good with absolutely No Flour, and they are Gluten Free. Plus another bonus is that they're protein packed! Your conscience and your taste buds will be at odds...what could taste this good and still be good for you?

We love them, but a lot of the time you can't exactly trust your own taste buds 100%. You need a guinea pig, an outside opinion. So after baking this batch Aaron ran a few out to the guy who was working on our shed and roof. He's a guy's guy...a gym goer...a sometimes big boat fisherman who has given himself stitches on more than a few occasions while out at sea. (yes, he regaled Aaron with his gnarly tales, flaunted his prowess with a needle and thread and showed him the scars to prove it)...anyway, I'm trying to say that this is a guy that would probably like his brownies to be brownies...not some earthy substitute. Well...guess what?...he loved these. Thought they were deelish! (but then again...he stitches his own wounds...so take it for what its worth.) Ha!

Ok, lets get to it.
This recipe will fill a 12 cup muffin pan perfectly.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Lightly grease one standard size muffin baking pan.

Here is what you will need:

1 (15oz.) can black beans well rinsed and drained
1 egg
3 tablespoons coconut oil melted ( or whatever your favorite baking oil is)
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (we've also tried almond extract in this recipe...yummy!)
1/2 cup sugar (we used sugar in the raw that we first pulsed in our food processor)
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

optional toppings:

chopped nuts (we love walnuts and peanuts)
semi sweet chocolate chips
white chocolate chips

makes 12 brownies

First gather and measure your ingredients! And make sure you have preheated your oven to 350 degrees.

Now, add everything but your toppings to your food processor, and process till smooth, stopping at least once to scrape down sides. You want it smooth. If it is too thick you can add a tablespoon of water. It should be smooth but not runny.

Now, spoon your batter into your greased muffin pan, we use an ice cream scoop to do this. They should be filled a little less than half way. And sprinkle with your favorite toppings. This time we went with walnuts and semi sweet chocolate chips.

Pop the pan in the oven for about 20 mins. Take them out when they start pulling away from the sides a bit. Let them cool in the pan about 10 mins. And then gently (using a fork) pop them out and let them cool completely on a cooling rack.

The outside will be firm and the inside will be so incredibly fudgy and good! And to be totally honest, as much as we love a warm brownie with milk or a la mode...these brownies are amazing cold out of the fridge!

We really hope you will give them a shot! You would never ever know that they are made with protein packed beans...or flour free!

Happy Baking!!

Friday Favorites

It's Friday the 5th of July. It should be a given that if the 4th falls on a Thursday that you automatically get Friday off. But no...hammers are a swingin' in our neighborhood, my brother Walt is on a job site, his girlfriend Val was up before the crack o' dawn to head off to her job...what is wrong with the world? Doesn't The Man know that BBQ takes some time to digest?! Oh well, at any rate...here we are at Friday and I've got some favorites to share...and this weekend there will a fab and healthy dessert recipe!
Oh Target! Yep! These chairs come in a set of two and can be found at Target! I've been a fan of this style of galvanized chairs forever and with a price like 2 for 99.99 I think they may finally become a reality in my life. And by the way...they also come in red!! So when it comes to fashion, decor, whatever...I guess the rule should be: "wait grasshopper, patience, Target will eventually provide all that is needed."

This is such a fabulous mixed media piece by Lebanese artist Huguette Caland. There's just so much going on but the color theme keeps it focused and calm. I love when you can't distinguish the thin line between haphazard and meticulous.

This series of photos of Moscow subways is kind of enchanting. I just feel like it would seriously take the edge off your commute if you got to stroll through these grand tunnels every morning and afternoon. Reminds me a bit of the subways of old New York when there were columns and arches and beautiful mosaics.

Love this print from Flapperdoodle. The gal behind Flapperdoodle and the blog Scathingly Brilliant, is a fellow New Jersey gal named Kate. This is one of Kate's illustrations from her summer roadtrips, wherein she plans to capture an iconic image to represent each state she travels through. This one is an ode to New Jersey and the early days of Miss America in Atlantic City. Since it's her home state...of course she chose Jersey to be first on her list of tribute illustrations. If you like this you'll love everything in her shop...and right now Kate is offering free shipping on US orders of $10+ with code 10FREESHIP

I am so in love with everything that Blackbird And The Owl makes! Handmade leather clutches, card holders, laptop cases and more. I love the color blocking and patterns they work with. They're the perfect middle between roughly hewn and fine.

These have to be some of the most adorable, most creative cupcakes I have seen in a long time! Aren't they just fantastic?! Totally brilliant! Made by a gal named Alana. Pop over to her blog for the DIY! Perfect for a housewarming gift or to take to a garden club meeting! Outstanding!

Ok guys, stay cool (literally and figuratively) on this July Friday. Happy Weekend!

Happy Independence Day!

Hey friends! Happy Independence Day! We're hoping you all have some fun plans for the day. Maybe some family and friends, time out in the yard, or beach, or park. Or if you're anything like me you prefer the air conditioning and maybe some crafting with a fur ball at your feet.
It has been mega hot and humid here on the NJ Shore. Luckily today it seems we get a break from the rain that has been arriving every single afternoon for like a week and a half. Just in time for the fireworks we'll be seeing tonight all up and down the coast and across the bay for as far as the eye can see. From the beach you can literally see dozens of fireworks displays all at the same time...even Macy's way across the pond in NYC.

For dinner we'll be grilling up some steak tacos with homemade chimichurri and pico de gallo. And for dessert we're baking up our new favorite brownies. A fledgeling addition to our list of fave recipes. We've made these brownies twice in the past week and a half! They are so so so good and you will not believe the secret ingredient! We'll be sharing that recipe with you this weekend! Gluten Free too!

Don't think for a second that its too late to get your patriotic craft on! Gather up some red, white and blue (and of course some sepia and black) goodies and take some time to make something in the spirit of the holiday.

We blogged this tutorial last month so that you guys could get a jump on things...and before Target sold out of these super cute paper fans! Maybe if you are lucky they still have some...and are on clearance!

Wishing you all a very fun, festive, and safe July 4th!!
Love from the NJ Shore!

"Treat Yo' Self" Mixed Media Cabinet Card Treat Cone Tutorial

Ahh! Pretty sure we can officially say we are back! Back in the swing of things. First, we both want to thank all of you sweethearts that left a comment on our last post. We are enjoying reading all of your reasons for loving mixed media! And we so so agree with you on like a million instances! And lets just for a second focus on one instance...lets call it "the mixed media scene". It's so awesome that we can all leave our busy stressful days for a moment and blog hop and look at pretty art...and everyone is talking about their preferred techniques, and products and mediums. We can all learn little bits from each other and it will completely enhance our own artwork the next time we sit down to create. This stuff is such a sweet escape. And we couldn't be more thrilled that we are one of your online destinations for tips, inspiration...whatever. We thank you!

Ok, with that said...howbout me and Aaron get on with the show...what we're here for in the first place. Lets get crafty!
We have been crazy for treat cones for years. We've made them for all holidays...for gifts, and swaps. And they never get old. We had a few cones sitting there in the studio, and we thought one would be the perfect jump off for a happy little blog tutorial.

Here is what you will need:

Bare paper mâché cone
Paint brushes
Cabinet card photocopy
Paint: cream, white, pink, aqua, yellow, brown, tan, black
Pom Pom trim
Chipboard oval or shape
Round dauber
Ribbon (we used vintage seam binding)
Bakery twine in black/white (Maya Road)
Crepe paper streamer
Veneer talk bubble
Patterned paper
Gold foil chocolate label (vintage)
Small printed lettering
All-purpose glue
Scissors
Hole punch
Hot glue gun
Mod Podge
Distress Ink

First, paint your cone cream. We only did one coat being that we're going to give it an antique wash.

So here's the antique wash. Just a little bit of tan and brown paint mixed with water.

Make sure the cream paint on your cone has dried, then just brush the wash onto a small area at a time.

Then use a paper towel and blot off the wash til the desired effect is achieved. Once the wash is dry then apply a topcoat of mod podge to seal it.

When the clear coat dries then use a dauber to apply your polka dots. We love this particular color palette...yellow, aqua, pink and white. But even if you prefer a different set of colors we do suggest that you try to do at least four separate colors...this way your polka dots will definitely come out random. You won't have to worry about the same color dots ending up next to each other.

When your polka dots dry you can then speckle to get this awesome effect. To speckle, just water down some paint, dip in a detail brush, and then hold the brush above the cone and tap the fore end of the brush so the wash speckles the cone. You wouldn't think to use black paint on top of these pretty pastels, but we absolutely love this look.

Once your speckling dries you can then adorn the top of your cone with some trims. We used all-purpose glue to attach this chubby tan pom pom, and then glued on some gold rick rack...because we love metallic gold! Oh, and we also cut one single pom pom and glued that to the bottom tip of the cone.

Then you can use a hole punch to punch holes at opposite sides of the cone. You'll have to squeeze pretty hard. Then just feed through your ribbons and tie a knot to secure them. We used a couple colors of seam binding and a piece of black and white bakers twine...making sure to leave some dangling ends. Then we ruched some crepe paper streamer and adhered it to the inner rim with all-purpose glue.

Ok, now for the star of the show...(first, a tiny little back story. See this guy? He's the owner of a fabulous candy factory...and he invites school kids to come and tour the factory. Upon finishing the tour each kid gets this parting gift...a fantastic cone filled with delicious candy...complete with a pic of the generous proprietor. Yes, this is a much more friendly version of the Willy Wonka tale...nobody gets turned into a giant blueberry!) Ok, that said...back to the crafting. Make a photocopy of a vintage cabinet card...making sure the portrait will fit onto this chipboard oval. Then select a patterned paper to be the background for the portrait. Or if you don't have a vintage cabinet card you can do what we did...we found the cabinet card of this dapper fella on Pinterest and printed him out. (Aaron thinks he resembles Jake Gyllenhaal...yeah I can see it.)

Once you've selected your paper, the way to cut a perfect oval is to lay the paper on top of the chipboard oval and then crease it with your fingertip. Then cut out and adhere it to your chipboard with mod podge. Also, cut out your portrait and then adhere that on top of the patterned paper background.

Then you can apply some Distress Ink to the edges for this fab antiqued effect. And maybe use a detail brush to add some pink rosy cheeks. (He owns a candy factory...of course he has sweet rosy cheeks!)

Next you can add details like this adorable pom pom trim, a talk bubble (You maybe wouldn't think "Treat Yo' Self" to be our proprietor's go-to catch phrase...but he was WAY ahead of his time!)...and we adore this vintage gold "assorted chocolates" candy label! And then attach the whole portrait medallion to your cone using hot glue.

Yeah...that's about it! Fill 'em up with some candies...just because.

And hang it in a place of honor! He looks perfect on our mantel.

We hope you have fun making this. We really really did! Also, if you enjoyed this project...we've got a sneaking suspicion that you'll love our book! Available for pre-order now!

Thanks so so much again for joining us!
