Friday Favorites

Hey guys! It's Friday. And for anyone who's keeping a close eye on the score...it's late Friday. We were working so concentratedly on a certain project that we had almost let the day slip past us entirely. And I had been wanting to share some of these Friday Favorites for a while now. Just a short time ago we stepped out of our studio and realized that the whole rest of the house was pitch dark. There we were with the overhead spotlights flooding our worktable...no clock in sight...we had no idea that night had fallen already! Well I'm glad I'm here now...and glad you guys are here too. I needed to step away for second...my vision was tilting to the myopic end of the scale. It's good to stop every so often to take a look at some of the fabulous things in life.

I love everything about the above photo project. A fun way to capture your kid's moods and expressions and make them into awesome posters! Check out the tutorial to find out just how easily you can do these...and cheap. They were printed as engineer prints at Fed Ex Kinkos for only $3.00 each. How fun would these be with pets?!

Bunnies! Need I say anymore? How incredibly cute are these customizable pieces. Get your adorable personalized necklace or bracelet from I Adorn U.

How incredibly cool is this? Rain drawings using NeverWet from Rust-Oleum. You can totally spray some outdoor surface, like concrete, with this product from Rust-Oleum and it will be rendered rain resistant. With a stencil you can create designs or block in some words that'll be invisible until they get wet. Our driveway is gravel, so...bummer. But yeah, a concrete driveway would be perfect for doing this.

Even though it was mega humid and hot here today I am already feeling my heart sing for the Fall. I'm so so ready for it and so are a ton of other peeps apparently. I've been seeing pumpkin recipes being pinned, and some coffee shops decided to put their pumpkin lattes into the rotation early. There are pics galore showing up on Instagram. I'm ready for Fall cooking and baking and for these very activities I think I just might require this wood bark pedestal stand.

This image is so darn beautiful...and until just this moment I hadn't noticed how much it captures my current emotional season. I guess by "emotional season" I mean the way that I feel as opposed to the actual time of the year that's on the calendar. See...I'm still full of the green leaves of summer...but I'm gradually transitioning into my own personal autumn. And there's that morning mist...the new day has yet to fully break. Yep...that's how I feel right now.

Ok, seriously...I have to get back to the task that had been stealing my Friday away in the first place. It's  just that important. Glad you could pop in at the water cooler for a quick chat!

...........................

As the end of summer approaches I can feel the collective energy of the blog community ramp up to a nearly palpable level. It's almost comparable to the big Holiday season. Around the Holidays the community collectively gets into the Holiday spirit...everyone doing Holiday things...shopping, making things, getting together, traveling. And so it is when the end of the summer comes around. We'll find ourselves all doing similar end-of-summer stuff. Going on trips...maybe it's that long awaited vacation, or the annual road trip with a friend to a craft show, or trade show. Or maybe this is your time to get creative and make stuff. The approaching Fall and it's transformative powers have got you designing new fashions for your shop...or knitting a new scarf for your cool weather wardrobe.
Well that's what I noticed when I was reading the latest posts or checking out the newest shop listings from the bloggers and talented makers you see above. I felt right in step with what they've got going on...all them. Despite the diversity of talents, themes, stories...I could feel a very similar energy. We're all boldly, brightly, and collectively moving on to the next stage of our own awesomeness. And it's a thrill to share the experience. So please...do yourself a favor and check out what these movers, shakers, makers, and picture takers are up to. You'll feel like you're right at home and like you're taking flight from the comforts of the nest...all at the same time!

Vegetarian Spaghetti Squash Chik Parm

Hey kids! This week is off to a pretty hectic start. It began with a dentist visit (party!), and also one of those do or die grocery shopping trips. We had been working so hard on deadline stuff that we couldn't even find the time to squeeze in our regular weekly shopping...and thus, over the weekend we ran out of EVERYTHING...like not just food...we even ran out of dog treats, paper towels, ziplocks, aluminum foil, and all sorts of stuff like that. So we've spent two huffing and puffing days getting our dental and domestic health in order. We can't wait to get our current projects finished up so that we can get busy on some fun Fall craft tutorials for you guys. I feel like we've been so absent lately when it comes to sharing art tutorials and I want to change that. Very soon...Promise!!

But in the meantime we've got another fab recipe to share with you guys and it is so fitting for the crunch that we've been in. This is totally a meal for a busy day. But we have very consciously changed our idea of a busy day meal. In the past we would work round the clock and dinner was simply a nuisance...something we had to get out of the way in order to work through the rest of the night. So guess what we did back then? We'd order in. The food would be delivered and we'd shovel it in and get back to work. Most likely the food was loaded with sodium, as most take-out food is, and it probably didn't taste all that great...though we probably grunted to each other about it being good...but what we actually meant with those grunts was "yes, this is food and we are eating it because otherwise we'd be fainting from not eating...etc." Anyway, a typical Italian take-out meal would be spaghetti and chicken parm....which translates to several thousand calories, salt and fat galore, followed by the ever present take-out food coma. So anyway, fast forward to the present day. We've changed a million things about ourselves to make life better and happier. One major thing is how we eat. Rule # 1 is that take-out food is not an option. Rule # 2 is that since we're making the meal from scratch then we should feel good about what we're making and that it should taste awesome and should not be coma inducing in any way.

Ok, so with those things in mind, this here is the perfect busy day meal for us! It is so fast and easy to prepare, plus it's like the supa dupa delicious, healthy and vegetarian version of the 'ole gut busting Italian take-out classic. In the past we shared a recipe in which we did an Alfredo sauce on spaghetti squash...and that was great...but we feel like this meal will appeal to so many more peeps. It's got a great simple tomato sauce and even the staunchest carnivores will fall head over heels for these MorningStar Farms Chik Patties. (find them in the frozen section of your grocery store) We love them...and my little bro Walt, who orders chicken parm whenever he can, thought that these were awesome. You can use them in a million ways. In fact, some time in the near future we'll do a post all about the million ways we use them. For this dish we let them defrost on the counter and then simply browned them in a pan with a tiny bit of olive oil. Then we made a batch of our quick and easy tomato sauce. And since our favorite market keeps their big wads of fresh mozzarella right at the entrance...we of course picked up one of those to cut up and top these off with. But you could just as easily use a bag of shredded mozzarella. Maybe what's best about this recipe is that each squash is this self contained perfect little meal. You can actually hold it in the palm of your hand and have nothing more than a fork to work with.

Here is what you will need:

2 Spaghetti Squash
Olive oil for brushing your squash
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
salt & pepper
4 Chik Patties (from Morningstar Farms)
1 cup of Fresh Mozzarella or shredded
fresh basil ribbons for serving

*Simple Tomato Sauce:
2 cups chopped tomatoes ( I use Pomi brand and LOVE it )
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 small yellow onion diced
2-3 teaspoons minced garlic
dash of balsamic vinegar
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1/2 teaspoon Italian herbs
dash of salt & pepper
dash of sugar (optional)

How to make your Tomato Sauce:
*If you opted to make your own simple tomato sauce, which takes like 5 mins, grab a small sauce pan. Set to medium heat, Add your olive oil. Now add your garlic, and cook till fragrant, about a minute. Now add your onions, stirring occasionally, cooking till translucent. Now add your crushed red pepper flakes and stir around a bit. Add your tomatoes, herbs, and balsamic vinegar. Stir. Add your salt, pepper and sugar. Remove from heat and set aside.

First Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Next cut each of your Squash in half and scoop out the seeds.

Pour a bit of olive oil in a little bowl and add your garlic. Brush the entire interior of your Squash  and place on an cookie sheet that you also brush with a bit of olive oil. If there is any garlic left in the bowl add it to your squash. Sprinkle your squash with a bit of salt and pepper. Now pop in the oven for about an hour. After you remove them make sure to keep that oven on...we'll be popping them back in to get the cheese all melty.

When your squash is fully cooked, gently scrape and pull with a fork...and you will see that it comes off in spaghetti like strands. Do this to all 4.

Now sprinkle with a bit of your parmesan cheese and toss around with a fork to spread throughout.

Now add about a 1/3 cup of sauce (or more if you'd like) to each squash half and spread out.

In a saute pan, heat about 2 teaspoons of olive oil and brown your Chik Patties on each side.

Slice your warm, browned, crispy Chik Patties and lay the strips atop your sauced squash. Then top with some mozzarella.

Sprinkle with a bit more Parmesan Cheese. And pop back in the oven for about 15 mins.

Top with a some fresh basil ribbons, a bit more grated parmesan, and serve!

Holy cow did we love these. And they came together so easily.  Me, Aaron, and Walt had one each. And since there were four total squash halves, me and Aar split one the next day for lunch. It heated up perfectly...maybe took about 15 minutes in a preheated oven.
We'd love to hear about your experience with this recipe...or spaghetti squash in general. Or let us know how you love to use chik patties.
Thanks again for cooking with us!

Keep Calm And Call Your Mom

Hey guys! Even though our weekend is already absolutely all filled up we still wanted to pop in and say hi! Ya know...there's definitely a benefit to breaking out of your "gotta-stay-on-task" mindset every once in a while...especially when the task at hand is artistic in nature. Connecting with your friends, family, or your peeps, will provide a tiny reminder as to why it is that you do the things you do. For instance...Aaron just took a ten minute break to call his mom up. Prior to that he was just working away, with a cramp in his back, and also he's been a bit under the weather the past two days...feeling a little crummy overall. So anyway...he calls his mom up, fills her in on what he's up to in the studio...and in turn, she lets him know that later this afternoon the grandkids will be stopping by to visit her. Now Barb (that's Aar's mom)...she absolutely LIVES for her grandkids! When she sees them it makes her day, week, month, year. In the past month Barb had been sick and was in the hospital a couple times...so lately her spirits were definitely in need of some boosting. Seriously, just a little while ago Aaron was sorta having a crappy feeling day...he was keeping busy...but still, the reigning mood was just "blah"...maybe even "blech". But, after talking to Barb and hearing how thrilled she was that she was getting to see her beloved Grandkids this afternoon...Aaron's whole mood has shifted. Barb is having a GOOD day...so it's a GOOD day now!

The two of us hope your weekend is treating you right. And if it isn't...maybe try to squeeze something in that will force the weekend to treat you right! : ) We've been busy in the studio for days. There is so much painting going on. Mega deadlines pepper our calendar. Stress levels are definitely high, but we are just so thankful that we get to do the things we love to do. It's important to remind yourself of the very message that our new mug from Tumbleweeds Handcraft states...because truly, and utterly, and profoundly...you gotta remember : "Life is Rad".

This here is a little sneak peek (that we shared on Instagram earlier this morning) of one of the fun projects you will find in our our book due out this fall. Just a little tiny teaser for you all! I mean, it's our book...we labored over it for a long while...and still, every so often we'll stop what we're doing...open up one of the many project files on our desktop...and we get so so excited about it! We simply can't wait for the book to hit shelves! We await the release with a pins & needles level of excitement. We hope that you guys do too!  :)

Oh, and ummmm...how cute are these make up brushes I just got? The color! The itty bitty kitties! Geez! They were like 5.00 for the whole set at Forever21. Of course they aren't the greatest quality...but come on now...or I should say - come on meeeow!

Oh, and just when you thought that you'd seen enough cute stuff today...how bout this guy?! I had moved the couch to sweep and I'm guessing that the new location made the arm of the couch just that much more attractive to Jack! He simply HAD TO hop there and get a look at the room from this fabulous new location. And yeah...he loves to pose!

I had mentioned Scoutmob on Friday...and this is where we ordered our Dave's Coffee syrups. Well, I just have to say Yummmmmm. I'm really so happy to have found them. And in general, I'm happy to have found Scoutmob. They promote independent artisans, craftsmen, designers...and through Scoutmob you'll have access to all the goods and products of these peeps who are working so passionately in their specialized fields. You gotta check them out...shop for yourself...or find gifts for the very special people in your life. I'm already hooked!

Ok, thanks for popping in and thanks for letting us check in with all of you. It's good to stay in touch with your peeps. And if you're having a semi-crummy day you might want to think about practicing the phrase Aaron has been using as his mantra lately: "Keep Calm And Call Your Mom"

Friday Favorites

Doing simple things on a regular schedule is good medicine. For me, when another Friday rolls around I'll get a slight twinge of pleasure at the thought of sharing another edition of Friday Favorites. It's not some earth changing event, or uber-vital commitment. It's just my weekly opportunity to blurb some things that are tickling my fancy at the moment, and hopefully some of these things will find you fancy folks equally as ticklish to their nimble-hip-cool-tastey-classic-bold-profound-subtle-fashionable fingers. In other words...sharing my Friday Favorites is a little thing. And take it from a gal with lots of life experience, who has suffered many ups and downs...You should strive for a life full of little things. I find that it's way easier than being a big picture type o' gal. Usually the big picture is something that cannot be helped...it's something that's gonna show up whether you like it or not...the big picture is always gonna be on display...loud and clear. And because of it's glaringly bright intensity the little things may become completely blown out in contrast...like if the sun had freckles. There's the big bright face of the sun...and rumor has it that she's got an adorable spray of freckles across her cheekbones...but you'll never see these because her face is way too bright to get a good look at. But you know how you just might get a peek at those adorable freckles? There's a trick that not too many people know about...and it's simple...it's this: "Be Cool."...Because what is it that "cool" people do? They wear shades silly! :)
What I'm saying is this...put on your shades...chill for a minute to take a look at the little things. The little things are what life is all about. So here's this Friday's list of Favorite little things.

Ok...up above...get a good look. That is a teeny tiny truck that converts into a teeny tiny mobile bakery! Can I please just attend a yard party where this cute as a button bakery on wheels comes rolling up!! California Bakery  just may possess the cutest little mobile branch of operations ever!

Can it just be Fall already?! Not that you really have to wait till then to bake up something like this Sea Salt Chocolate and Pecan Tart...but if I'm indulging...if I'm surrendering hook, line, and sinker to this edible portion of heaven, then I'd like to give myself over entirely to the experience. I want to be wearing layers of cozy gray sweater material whilst sipping some hot coffee and watching billowy silver clouds move across the late afternoon sky.

Again, this simple phrase rendered by Molly Jacques plays right into what I was saying above about seeing the little things in life. One very big little thing is Molly's mind blowing gift for hand lettering. The typography game is fierce right now and her work is at the top of the field. With a client list like Martha Stewart, Anthology, and Bon Appetit...I don't think you'll be able to miss her handiwork.

Totally in love with the incredibly darling, creative, handmade boutonnieres from Fritts Rosenow. You gotta take a look at their collection. With categories like "groupie", "nautical",  and "Geek Chic" you are bound to find something adorable for that boringly naked lapel. These are one of those things that fall under the "why would you not?" category.
Example:
Q: "oh dear...why would I wear a boutonniere that looks like a mounted deer head?"
A: "why would you not?"

This darling dress from Marimekko. I've blogged my love for their patterns in the past and once again, I'm so smitten with how playful their designs are. I feel like their stuff is walking art. And now is as good a time as any to reference another great quote from the master:
"One should either be a work of art, or wear a work of art." - Oscar Wilde

Love this sign by Andy Carlyle hanging in the lobby at Scoutmob. Don't you want to be a Maker of the Authentic, the Unique, and the Curious? Or at the very least...don't you want to support those who are?? I do.
And speaking of Scoutmob...I'm now reminding myself to blog about them at greater length next week. Scoutmob was responsible for a very good mail day this past week and they've directly enhanced my daily iced coffee experience. I'll be blogging a bit more about them soon so be sure to check back!

And while on the subject of Makers. This rules. I love the typography, the sentiment, the lifestyle it nods to. And get ready for this...It is a temporary tattoo! One of many super fun designs over at Tattly. Their selection of temp tattoos is so so goood. I'm imaging little dudes or gals strutting around with some of these. I love the toddler tattoo scene.
I'm totally going to be ordering some!

Ok, Happy Friday to all! Breaking Bad is only slightly more than 48 hours away!
xo, Jenny...and Aaron says hi!

10 Things You Might Not Know About Aaron

Jenny tagged me...challenging me to do this post: 10 Things You Might Not Know About Me. Usually I'd ignore such a request because I believe that readers of Everyday is a Holiday have much better things to be concerned with. The title should read 10 Things You Might Not Know Nor Did You Really Care to Know About Me. But Jenny urged me to take the time to share a bit about myself...people might care...people might be entertained...enlightened...amused...bewildered. Ha! Anyway, here's the ten. Some things might be surprising...some are probably completely expected...some are mundane...some are 'so what?' I apologize for how lengthy this is but I feel like I'm not interesting enough to just list bare facts. My facts need to be bolstered by stories, explanations, excuses, apologies...
Enjoy.

1. Most people in my current life would have trouble believing that I was a jock in high school. And they'd be justified in their disbelief. By my looks, vocation, demeanor, and tastes, I'm a very unlikely jock. I was captain of the football team and wrestling team and was very much apt to bark and growl and spend 3 hours a day in the weight room. This was 18 something years ago at this point and while the weight room habit has been an off and on thing since then, I have never really looked back or revisited sports in any way. I can bet that in these 18 years I haven't watched more than a couple quarters of a football game per year...and this would be at a super bowl party, which I'm attending for the snacks and the friends. It's not that I DISlike sports now...it's just that I don't LIKE them. I don't seek them out ever. There are better things to think about or be entertained by I guess. I've got cupcakes to paint for pete's sake.

2. The only material things I desire are books. Maybe if there was more dough in the coffers I'd begin to like other things. But for now and for the past long while my only desire is books. Any time that we get a little extra cash I will ask Jenny if I can fill up an Amazon cart. The days leading up to delivery are happy and the following weeks spent with my new books are happy. It's simple.

 3. I currently live in the same 1 square mile town that I was born and raised in. Granted, I moved away from here for a great many years...but now I'm back. Does it feel weird? yes. Has it changed a lot? yes and no. Is this where I will stay for the long haul? no. Am I content with living here right now? yeah. It's great that my parent's house is within walking distance. And since I pretty much leave the house only once a week to get some groceries, it may as well be a lunar landscape outside my door.

4.  I do not know the words to my favorite songs. And I mean my All Time favorite songs...not like this week's favorites. No, the songs that I absolutely live for are peppered with phonetic utterances that just might be actual words...but I'd never know. For instance, in Sympathy for the Devil...there's a part that maybe goes something like: "I lay traps for troubadours who gaykeel beefo they each wahwey."  I don't know what it really is and I don't care. Don't get me wrong...I still live for that song and always have. And it's weird because I was the singer in a band for like a dozen years. I wrote lyrics...you'd think I'd care what they are. Also, I'm a big reader...big into words. But when it comes to rock I tend to selectively hear snippets of meaningful lyrics...and those snippets will mean the world to me. I'm just not a word-for-word guy...I'm a gimme the gist type o' listener. But I'm not a casual fan by any means...no, like I said, I LIVE for these songs...whatever it is they might be trying to say.

5. Here's the thing...I've seen buckets of art house cinema. I'm versed in Truffaut, Kurosawa, Kazan...all that. And I live for that stuff. But...I've got two movies that I can watch anytime, anywhere, anyhow, and I will be fully immersed, stimulated, entertained, inspired, artistically medicated, and whatever else. These two personal masterpieces are Lethal Weapon and Point Break. Sure, they are less than highbrow...but so am I. Wow...didn't really realize until just right now that the common denominator is Gary Busey. Seriously, I never added that part up. Bless me.

 6. I hate the cold. And it's sorta a new thing. Well, one of the factors is that after a very near fatal car crash a decade ago I now have pain in the cold months due to having a bunch of hardware in my leg. But overall, I probably never liked the cold. I will say that I've recently become much more self aware. I've taken some time to identify the things that make me sad or happy deep down. Cold and winter in general make me sad. And I always thought I'd live in New Jersey forever. But as of late I'm contemplating a future in San Diego. Seriously, it's commonplace for me to sit online and scroll through daily temps in San Diego spanning back a year or so. I read those wonderful digits that have a year round average of 70 degrees and just dream of a positive, bright smiling face in the morning mirror. That should be their city motto...but then again, people might think of Bob Filner's creepy smiling face. nix that.

7. I met the girl that I have now been with for twenty years because I liked the look of her neck one day. There I was in my small town high school...Junior year...two new girls move to town. By the locals they are soon dubbed "Hip Hop 1" and "Hip Hop 2"...Jenny and her sister respectively. They are in my school for six months and I never really lay eyes on them. Which is out of the ordinary because it's a tiny school and people are always all up in other people's business. But I was mostly aloof by choice. I slept in every single class, or would ask to go to the bathroom and then I'd sneak down to the weight room to do a few sets...or skip class entirely so that I could sleep on the partially rolled out wrestling mat behind the stage curtain. Yes, I liked to sleep and do jock things, nothing else really. Anyway, one day I'm late to class and I see Hip Hop 1 on the stairwell. She's late too, so we are the only ones there. Anyway, she keeps her eyes looking anywhere but in my direction...I later learn that this is because she hated me...though what she really hated was the town and believed that I was the walking embodiment of the town...makes sense I guess. Anyway, she's walking past, rolling hers eyes to the heavens to let me know that I'm the last thing on her radar, and she's got her hair pulled up, and she's craning her head and eyeballs so far away from my lowly self that I can unabashedly stare at her as she walks past...and for some reason my eyes just focus on this long lean white neck. A couple days later I ask her out and fast forward twenty years...now we are the proud parents of two very neurotic chihuahuas. FYI...I do not now nor have I ever had "a thing" for necks. The whole thing was just random.

8. Ok, for most of my adult life if someone were to ask me what my favorite food is, without a breath I would respond "spaghetti and meatballs". This of course has prompted many an eye roll from Jenny. First, because she doesn't really believe me when I say it...and second...c'mon Spaghetti and Meatballs?! are you 7 years old?? I'll admit here that in my heart of hearts that it's probably not my favorite dish. But it holds some importance in my gourmandizing life. I feel like spaghetti and meatballs have been the food version of my American Embassy...like wherever I go...when the blacked out sedans are at my heels and I've got the briefcase full of top secret state documents...I can slide into the rescuing hands of a familiar plate of spaghetti and meatballs. This of course has been disproved by many bad dishes of Spaghetti & Meatballs...but still. And yeah, we have been using Rao's famous meatball recipe at home for like a dozen years...and it's wonderful. But to prove Jenny's rolling eyeballs correct...it is not my #1 dish. We've been cooking so much over the past year, and all of it is so drop dead awesome that I really can't say what my favorite is. Though I do always always want to go out for Indian on my birthday.

 9. My all time favorite novel is Lolita. For the past dozen years I've probably cracked it back open at least once a month to read parts of it over and over again.

10. I have three tattoos of Jenny. So that's three times that I have tested the ole' adage that assures - once you get a tattoo of your girl, the relationship is doomed to fail. And I will test it yet again...the next tattoo that I get will be another Jenny. I'm not drawing this one. It's a design by the amazing Angelique Houtkamp that I'm appropriating to contain "Jenny" and pink hair. I always enjoy Jenny's reaction to the Jenny tattoos. When I showed her the latest sketch of the forthcoming Jenny tattoo (see above) she rolled her eyes and said "You're crazy...another one?"
